Name change question

I know there are many posts about this so bare with me. Does anybody know if it is possible to change your name to his on the marriage license and almost totally use your maiden name for everything else? I am wondering if I can leave it the same except for joint accounts the two of us have? I didnt want to change mine on the marriage license, but it was such a big deal and it meant alot to him and now I dont know how I feel about using his last name frequently. Thanks so much.

Re: Name change question

You're in for a tough ride on this Cindy. I don't think that you can casually use Tom's last name, especially if you already changed it on your marriage license and you intend to have the same name as Tom on your bank accounts. Remember, banks require valid IDs to withdraw money, purchase bonds, certified or cashier's checks, etc. I do not think that a marriage license will work [as a valid ID] in the long term, b/c you don't have a photo ID to back it up.

If you only intend to socially use your husband's last name, then you should have left your maiden name on the marriage license, since that is an official government record.

It's unfortunate that you are having second thoughts about this, but there has to be a way around this. Usually, when your name is changed on the marriage cert, you have to go to the social security office and legally change it with all government agencies, the DMV, etc. I'll be happy to help you search online for a solution.
Good luck!

Re: Name change question

I actually use both my married name and my maiden name. I did change it on the marriage license but not SS or my driver's license. I have some credit cards still in my maiden name and some in my married name. I have never been questioned since a woman keeping her maiden name is becoming more common. Bank accounts are in my maiden name also. Bear in mind that if you change your SS record you have to change bank accounts and employment records. If you don't you may have problems with your SS records, bank records and the IRS.

According to my divorce attorney(from my first marriage), you are legally allowed to use any name by which you are now or have previously been known as long as it is not for illegal purposes.

Thanks Claud and Wendy for the reponse. Wendy, I was thinking along the lines of what you were saying. I know I am using my maiden name for work and havent changed anything so far. Maybe I will contact an attorney I have dealt with in the past on this one. Thank you claud for offering research. If you stumble on something, let me know.
