Do I need to bring my *original* marriage certificate to the SS office and DMV or will a copy suffice? I'm guessing original, but praying for copy so I can go today while I'm at work... I forgot to bring the original with me...

Re: name change question
I only needed my Marriage License and Drivers License for SS. It was really simple to do and was done in about 45 minutes or so. I had everything else with me, but she never asked for it.

Re: name change question
My question is did you need the *original* or just a copy?

Re: name change question
Nope. Original is needed. At least I know this for sure at SS office. A friend of mine tried to use a copy and they wouldnt take it.

Had a feeling...
They'll just make a copy of the original and give me the original back, right? (I only have one original!)

Re: name change question
Gotcha - just making sure they don't want to keep the original b/c then I'd have to order more.

Re: name change question
Nope, you keep your original marriage certificate. You just need to show it to them and then they hand it right back.

Re: name change question
You can use a CERTIFIED copy but not a photo copy. That's what I used. It needs to have the raised stamp on it so it is offficial.

Yep, they give it back.
The only thing I needed to send the original for (a certified copy would've done as well) was when I applied for my new passport.
I have a photocopy at my desk at work now in case I need to fax it anywhere (a lot of frequent travel programs - hotels, airlines, etc. - needed a copy of it to change my name).
