A friend of mine, who is much older informed me that on your SS, you can't have a hyphened last name. Like Sally Anne Smith-Moss. You can make it Sally Anne SmithMoss, but that SS won't acknowledge hyphen. Is this true. And that you can hyphen your drivers license and don't have to add the last, last name to SS. I think she is mistaken, but I would like to know. Thanks girls.

Re: Name change question...
Pretty sure that is correct. Our office participates in the Electronic Verification Program, into which we pipe all the I-9 form data. We had a staff member whose name was hyphenated and after putting it in with the hyphen, SSA came back with a 'non-confirmation' meaning they could not find them in their data base. We had to close the case, and reopen a new one where we had use the first part of the name as the middle name to get it to go through.

Re: Name change question...
thats so weird---cause i have had clients who come in to do taxes and such and and they have SS cards with hyphenated names. i don't know if that is because many of them are immigrants and have 2 last names on their original birth certificates---or kids born here to immigrant parents and the parents put the 2 last names on their birth certificates.
