Name Change question.

Name Change question.

Hi gals! I posted this on LIF, but I'm hoping to get some advice here as well. I got married in February and, under pressure from DH, changed my name in August to his name. Well, (and I know this may sound crazy) I feel like I need to change my name back to my madien name. I just feel like I kind of lost my identity and whatnot, so I want to change it back. Can someone point me in the right direction? Would I have to go to court? Like Family Court in Central Islip? I would like to go tomorrow and get the ball rolling, as I am a teacher and go back to work on Monday. Thanks so much for your guidance!

Hmmm, I'm sure if you call the DMV, they probably can help you out. Once you have your licensce in your maiden name, you can use that along with your birth certificate to change your passport, social security, etc.

I believe you now have to go to court to change it back. When you signed the paper that was the name you were taking for good. I would contact the town clerk that handles the marriage licenses. They were the ones that told me that this is what I'm stuck with so they could tell you what you need to do.

As a side note, DH wanted me to take his name and that was it. I hyphenated my last name because I didn't want to lose my family name. My sister and I are the last and I wanted to keep it for myself. I have no idea what my sister plans on doing when she gets married. DH wasn't happy, but oh well. It's not like I didn't take his name at all.

Thanks for your replies ladies. I am going to call Riverhead today (obviously when it opens!) and ask where I have to go. I heard that you have to go to supreme court and I think that's in Riverhead. I will let you know how it turns out-I will also try giving the town clerk a call, hopefully someone can direct me to the right place! Thanks!
