Name Change ?s

I was wondering if anyone knows what you need to bring to the DMV to change your name on your license. Also, does anyone know where there is a Social Security office in Suffulk county?

Oh Meg, I wish you luck!!! I went last month for the second time (yup, put it off for as long as I could) and my experience the first time was a nightmare!!! But from what I hear, it seems the DMV has different rules for Suffolk County then Queens, which makes no sense since it's all the same state, but whatever.

Ok, don't mean to scare you, but I needed the ORIGINAL marriage license, your license, your registration and your ORIGINAL title (and if you've paid the car off, the ORIGINAL lien satisfaction letter). Bring your SS card also -- I had to show it the first time, but not the second (makes no sense).

Good luck and I really hope you don't have the experience I did!! I think they're nicer out in Long Island then here in Queens!!!

There is a SS office in Melville, on Old Walt Whitman road (right near rt. 110).

There are also DMVs in Huntington and Medford.

You just need to bring an official copy of your marriage license (which you can get for $10 from the town clerk's office), your current license, and $3 bucks. I had no problems, but had to wait an hour in Medford (I went during lunch). There is a form you have to fill out, which you get at the DMV.

If you can, go early. And bring a pen. If you forget to bring one, Medford makes you buy them for 25 cents!

If you are changing your car registration, you may need to bring more stuff. I just changed my license.

Re: Name Change ?s- I just did it!

I changed my name a year ago with SS but my license just expired with my old name on it and when I bought my marriage certificate to show them, they wanted to see the SS card and I didn't have it on me. They were ready to turn me away so get you SS card first in your married name and bring it with you. Good Luck!

Re: Name Change ?s

Did the SS office in Melville. I was in and out in 10 minutes. I brought my drivers license for current ID and my original marriage certificate for proof of name change. I got my card in 10 days. Oh, and I kept my maiden name as my middle name and dropped my given middle name. No problems...

DMV, I went to the one in Huntington. I waited over an hour at lunch time on a Friday in July. The lady I had was nasty. She told me I had no right to use my maiden name as my middle name with out a court order legally changing it. I showed her my new SS card with my maiden name as my middle name. She gave me some crap about that being federal government but the DMV was a state office. She told me to write Pataki. She would not process my license renewal with the name change. I refused to leave after waiting all that time. Her manager told me I could hyphenate my name. No way, I took hubby's last name and didn't hyphenate. So after 15 minutes of arguing and me getting hot tempered right back at this nasty lady, all I had to do was not to put a middle name or initial on my license. If the dumb lady had told me I didn't need the middle name/initial, none of the unfriendliness would have happenend.....

Word of caution. I spelled out my maiden name as my middle name on my SS card because my maiden name is relatively short. All other things like credit cards and payroll and my bank accounts I used my initial instead since hubby's last name is long. Since the SS cards spells it out, I should have made all other documents the same. In the eyes of DMV, it's not the same. Just be consistent - spell it out every time or use the initial every time.

Good Luck

this is the same problem I had...but she said I could NOT leave my middle initial off....annoying.

I am all worried now that I am going to have problems in the future....
