Name change - What comes first DMV or SS? - UPDATED

I'd love to shoot over to the DMV Express over lunch, but was wondering if I needed to change my name at SS before I do this?

What do you all think?

Updated to add that I just called DMV customer service and you can just bring them your marriage license

Social Security first. I had to show my DL with my maiden name at SS

I didn't have to have my SS# changed first..i did DMV first, it wasn't a problem, i just needed my marriage certificate!

went went to the dmv. they told me i need the marriage certificate and birth certificate. but they never asked me for the birth certificate. jenn..r u going to the one on 34th and 8th?

Ditto....I actually waited until almost 6 months later to do SS and only because I HAD to!

I haven't changed my name yet but a friend of mine went to DMV first. As long as your have yoru ml with you it doesn't matter.

Right! I did them in the same day, all I needed was my marriage certificate. Neither place asked for either card.....

And it's official, you cannot make your maiden name a second middle name at DMV, only SS.....weird.......

ETA: actually I lied, SS did ask for my DL, but it still had my maiden name.....

Interesting thread. I know when I went to DMV (after SS), the first thing the lady at DMV asked me was if I went to SS already.

Maybe it's different in NJ
