Name Change- Where do I start???

Name Change- Where do I start???

Is there a certain order to do things??

I know SS office has to be first, then I'll do DMV/Registration, but THEN where???

And do I NEED proof to change it for banks, credit cards, etc??

Congratulations MRS!!!!

The first 2 things I did were DMV and SS but I did it after we got our marriage license (which was waiting for us when we got back from our HM). I faxed copies of the marriage license to my student loan company, credit card, alama mater, and retirement pension plan. I went to the bank with it and had my name changed there. When I got my new SS card (in about 2 weeks), I was able to change my name at work. Hope this helps!

my CC company didnt need any proof, i just called them and told them.

bank needs to see the certificate

so does DMV & SS (not that i did either one yet), but make sur eyou bring your Title with you, you need it to change your registration

I did:

Social Security first

then, DMV

Then, Passport. (while that was out, I called all of my credit cards)

And, don't forget to do your health insurance and other insurance policies

Just remember, you need to bring your original certificate with you. They won't accept a copy!

I did SS and DMV first then work (payroll and benefits), bank and credit cards, library card,
and I will be doing my passport last since I have to renew it this Dec. so I'll renew and change name.

How do you change your name on your passport?

I did all of this yesterday:

Went to DMV with my marriage certificate and changed license, registration and title.

Went to SS office and changed SS card.

Went to bank - ordered new checks and debit card.

Called Car Ins company (mine just required an email since he is a family friend, but most probably require a faxed copy of the marriage certificate)

Called credit card company and changed name over phone - they didn't require proof.

Today I will call all of the places I get bills from - LIPA, cell phone, student loan, etc and change name

Small things like AAA membership I'm not doing until time to renew

Dr.'s offices, etc I'll do when I go to my next appointments

I took care of work before school was out - they didn't need proof from me either - and it will be all changed when I go back in September.

The whole process really wasn't as bad as I had expected - and it is kind of exciting!!

I must have spent about 20 hours over the past two days with all of this. I am ALMOSt done except for more things I have to do in person (school registrar, etc). Yes start with SS and DMV and go from there. I had to get numerous certified copies of my license since i had to mail some to my IRA, Counseling Certification, etc. Credit cards and bills,etc were fine with a phone call. GL! I

Make sure its your marriage LISENCE, not the certificate from the church. The DMV wont accept the certificate.
