Re: name changing...marriage certificate
Yes you need the certificate to change things like SS#, license, registration...and I even found one credit card company wanted a copy of it to change my name on the card!! Not all asked for this though. I got my certificate when I got home from my honeymoon. Your officiant usually mails it in for you, at least that is what mine did. I didn't use a kit, I just went to all the sources and changed it, credit cards I called up,etc. It really wasn't as annoying as I thought.
Hope this helps!

Re: name changing...marriage certificate
I know someone who got the name change kit and they thought it was a waste of money. It really wasn't that hard for me to change my name at all. Our marriage license was sent to us automatically and then I brought that with me to DMV, SS. I also just called my CC companies and changed it right over the phone.

Re: name changing...marriage certificate
dka-We got married the same day as you and I got mine yesterday (but for some reason yesterday was the day I rec'd all my mail from when I was away so I am not sure exactly when it came in). My church made us sign us at the reheasal dinner a week before my wedding so I had a little bit of a head start. It was in a pain white window envelope addressed to Mr and Mrs. XYZ. I knew right away what it was!
Yours should be within the next week as long as your church mailed it right away.
Now, I have to figure out everything I have to do. Let me know anything you find out or any tips!
Thanks.

Re: name changing...marriage certificate
It's actually pretty easy. I stressed about it at first...but it's not a big deal.
I went to DMV, SS and the bank and did that in person.
My credit cards and car insurance I did over the phone.
I still have to change my registration for my car. My father is a cop and he did say that you can get a ticket if you license is different than your insurance. He said, 'Would he ever write a ticket? - NO, but best to be safe'.
So, I need to go back to DMV and change that stuff. At work...I just notified someone in HR and it filtered down.
It's so exciting and yet a very strange feeling all at once!

Re: name changing...marriage certificate
I agree with Mrs2Be...I thought it was going to be bad but it wasn't. And, if you have the title to your car, that needs to be changed too. Your license, your registration, your insurance, and your title should all jive with the same name. As I got my credit cards in, I called them each, a little at a time.
