So, I have to go to a shiva tonight. What do I bring? I don't know any Kosher food places around here so I was thinking of bringing an Edible Arrangement. Is that ok? I mean, its fruit right? Fruit isn't kosher or non kosher, is it?

I think a fruit basket is a nice and safe thing to bring considering that they wont be doing much cooking or leaving their house during this period.
Do they keep kosher? If so i would stop by a kosher deli and pick some things up for them there like pastries, etc.

If they don't keep a kosher house anything is fine. Just make sure it's food.

If they're not kosher then you can bring anything. Fruit, cookies, whatever, just no flowers.

I know they got all the food catered kosher & they had to get it brought in from Boston (70 miles away). It is very hard to find kosher stuff here which is why I thought of the fruit.

Ugh! I feel your pain ... I remember trying to celebrate Passover while being away at school in RI
I had to have my parents ship me food!
Going with a fruit arrangement (those edible ones are adorable!!) is definitely 'safer' than pretty much anything else. Flowers are definitely a no-no. Non-kosher meat is out, and bagels probably wouldn't be safe either since the place selling them likely sells both milk & meat (making the bagels not kosher),
If you want, you can try sending an FM to evnme, she's a cantor and might be able to give you more insight.

im not jewish but i used to work in a jewish bakery back in the day...we did 'kosher-style' which i was told was ok. most people would buy like a pound of cookies or some type of coffee cake - i think it's because you are supposed to bring something sweet.

If it were me, I'd bring some mixed nuts and dried fruit.
I remember when my grandmother passed away, everyone that came to the house brought some sort of sweets- candy, cookies, cakes, etc. I was so sick of the sweets that I was thrilled when someone brought the nuts. JMO

I'm in Rhode Island. I am surrounded by Guidos. Very small Jewish population.

Sorry to crash Not sure where exactly you are but have you tried doing a google search?
fruit is perfectly fine and if you'd rather bring cookies I'm sure you can find a deli or something to get a tray of cookies.

Thank you everyone. I went with Edible Arrangements, They will be doing a sympathy arrangement of fruits. They asked if I wanted pineapples cut in the shape of the star of David, but I didn't think that was necessary, do you? The idea seemed hokey to me.
