OK so our dining room furniture came yesterday --so we dug out all the boxes of china--the problem we couldnt figure out where everything goes-- it has a server piece on the bottom(3 drawers, 3 closets) and then the top hutch is 3 glass doors with 2 shelves and then an open buffet bottom--
we ended up putting 2 place settings with crystal on either side of the top shelf-- and then in the middle of that we have a set of candlesticks with our lenox invitation plate--then on the bottom shelf--random things--silver bowls, some serving pieces, creamer, veg bowl, etc--
is this right? what has anyone else done? in my mothers hutch it is more functional with the plates standing up along the back and plates stacked on top of each other--and I have 'learned' this is not the correct way--so HELP!!!!
and stop laughing

Who's laughing??? I don't have dining room furniture yet, but something tells me I'll be having the same issues as you when I do! It sounds like you have everything arranged very nicely ~ I can't imagine there would be a better way! : )

Laura, I'm not sure if there is any 'correct' way to set this up. Maybe Martha Stewart knows..lol. The way you did it sounds right to me. I will be getting delivery on my server/hutch in about 2 weeks, so I will be going through the same thing! I can't believe I've been married for over a year and I still have china in boxes!

I think the way you have it is fine. You can set it up any way you want.
I put 6 place setting lined up, with the dishes leaning up in the back, then I put the cups and saucers in front of each plate. The bottom shelf I lined up some of the pieces of our China, like a bowl on top of a platter. Then aside to them is a lennox piec that was my grandma's. Then I have my toasting glasses from our wedding. I didnt put any wine glasses in the china cabinet, because we hav a piece in our dining room that has a little wine bar, which holds wine glasses, and and wine bottles.I hope I made sense LOL!!!

help..
I finally found and recieved my mission styke hutch about 14 motnhs afterour wedding date///so patience pays off.
I am not sure why you said you 'learned' that stacking the dishes dont work- unless soemthing went wrong and they slid and broke.
I have a server on the bottom- 2 drawers and two doors that open to a bottom storage area. That is where I store my extra place settings.
In the top Hutch on the glass shelves is where my moms 2 tea services are ( cant seem to let go of them), mid shelf is the glassware & Reidels, and the bottom is where my MIL arranged my moms china. A few serving plates propped up in back and alternating stacks of place settings with the coffee cups nestled too.
your desing sounds wonderful and it works- so dont worry! ENJOY!

There is no 'correct' way
Its just a matter of taste and function.
I dont have any of my china on display but I have almost all my crystal out. I also have our lenox cake topper and some other lenox and waterford pieces on display.
Your design sounds lovely, if it works for you its correct.

Thanks guys
I know there isnt a correct way but as we were doing it Jeremy said check Emily Post--so I figured you guys are the next best thing-- What I meant about my mom's hutch --she used it as a fnuctional piece more than a display case--one other question has anyone ever bought those bag/dividers to put the extra settings in? are they necessary--also I need good bags for my silver serving pieces--any suggestions-- we thought they came with them but when we opened them up we realized they werent bags but more like covers--

Thanks guys
Laura I have all my china in those bags, they arent necessary but they are a little extra protection plus they keep the dust out.
You Definately want either a silver chest or silver protectors if you want dont want to spend a lot of time polishing.

Bed Bath and Beyond - I got the canvas bags. I find them very convenient, not that I use my china much. My silver came with a chest, which is also convenient. If I had a server with drawers I would probably use the silver pouches but since I have the chest I will peobably never change it.
