Need help from a NW that changed her middle and last name
What is the first step I am supposed to take? I am changing my name to First Maiden Married. DH is being really annoying about me doing this immdiately although when I ask him to perform some internet research or help me out in any way, he refuses (despite the fact that I work 10+ hours a day and he isn't working right now...). so any help is really appreciated because I literally do not have time to do this stuff and he doesn't get it.

When you get the form from SS office it says 'current name' and 'new name to be shown on card' and you just have to write in your new first/middle/last name.

there is a form you will out and take to court.. they have a list of documents you would need to take with you.. birth certificate, marriage certificate, license and i took a copy of my passport as well.. you pay $60 i think.. get a court date and appear in front of a judge.. judge will say ok.. and you have announce your name change in one of the papers they tell you too.. and then come back with the proof.. get your name change papers... get it stamped.. and first would be social security.. then dmv and so on.. hth it took me about 2 months.. and now since i have dual citizenship.. i have to change my name in the second passport..

i changed my name to First Middle Maiden Married, and did it at social security. i filled out my new name that way, and that's what my new ss card says. i filled out their form, brought in my marriage cert, and that was it.

When we went to get our marriage license the lady said to fill out the paperwork there by just swapping your current middle name for the new one... your maiden name) and then i would think ud just apply for new ss card etc.
unfortunately i wasn't given a middle name at birth....so the lady said i would have to submit a 'legal name change'...like through the court (or get a lawyer) if i wanted my maiden name as my last name cuz my birth certificate would have to be changed. so i never did it the way above.
i havent done anything yet so im not much help other than that

What is filled out on your marriage license? That is the name you have to use. Otherwise you have to go to court to legally change your name.
For example, my legal maiden name is: Michelle Campbell Bxxxxx
When we filled out the stuff for our marriage licence I was told to fill out what I wanted it to be forever otherwise I'd have to go to court to change it. My name is hyphenated. I filled it out:
Michelle Bxxxxxx-Cxxxxxxx

What is filled out on your marriage license? That is the name you have to use. Otherwise you have to go to court to legally change your name.
For example, my legal maiden name is: Michelle Campbell Bxxxxx
When we filled out the stuff for our marriage licence I was told to fill out what I wanted it to be forever otherwise I'd have to go to court to change it. My name is hyphenated. I filled it out:
Michelle Bxxxxxx-Cxxxxxxx
On my marriage license it is filled out as First Maiden. So I guess I am going to court... fantastic. Like I have the time to deal with the stuff during business hours!

i dont think this is true actually. your marriage license doesn't legally change your name. so when I told them I wasn't sure and I read up on it, if I wanted to take DH's name but put my maiden name on my ML, i'd have to go to court to have the ML itself changed. so i put his name on the ML, but have never legally changed my name (and don't plan to) that way if i have a change of heart about legally changing it, I don't have to go to court to get a new ML. what's on your ML isn't official until you legally change it with SS...
but for the OP, based on A's experience since I know she did this - I'm pretty sure you have to go to court no matter what to officially get first maiden married.

It's not something that would take a long time to do. You can do it during your lunch hour.

Just because your SS card hasn't been changed, you did write your SS# on the marriage license, no?

I don't think I have had a lunch hour for years. I usually eat at my desk. It is not so easy to disappear from the office for a hour or two.

I know that someone was saying on BHB that in order to make your Maiden name your Middle name now you have to make a legal name change. Which I'm assuming you have to go to court for.

Is your office ever closed for a holiday like Good Friday or the day after Thanksgiving? The courts are open then.

Ok I was able to change my name legally all through the mail, and did NOT have to go there at all. All I had to do was send them my passport. I could have made my name Heather Flap Jacks and it would have been fine.

This is all making me anxious!! I want to to do First Middle Maiden Married. What do I put on my marriage liscence? DO I need court? when would I do the court thing?
