Need help with Interviewing questions!!!

I am interviewing a recent college grad tomorrow, and I am looking for suggestions as to what I should ask her... She graduated this year and had 2 summer internships at the same place.

The job is in finance field, however, its difficult to expect her to know a whole lot just out of school.

Any suggestions??? Its my first time interviewing...

I need some brainstorming:

All I have now is:

-Explain discounted CF

-Future goals (Short and Long Term). How will your major in XYZ and this experience help you achieve that?

-Most challenging class in college

-Have you had a group project not go well right before deadline, how did you handle it as a group and what was your role?

Thank you girls

Re: Need help with Interviewing questions!!!

I went through a ton of interviewing last year when i graduated law school and i got the same questions over and over again...however, after reading your questions i realize none of them were really substantive:

1. Why do you want to work here? (i was asked this on EVERY interview)
2. What did you like best/worst about law school?
3. I see you did well in X...why was that such a good subject for you etc.?
4. Where are you from, what do you like to do in your free time etc. etc.
5. Then, they would take one previous job or internship from my resume and ask me questions about it.

I have to say that I think the best overall interviews are ones where you don't ask someone difficult or very open-ended questions because it gets the interviewee very nervous and it is hard for you to guage their potential. I.e. one judge asked me...if you could be a poet or philosopher which would you be? why? which work of theirs do you like etc? I was so nervous trying to think of what to say...what he wanted me to say etc...it screwed up the whole interview and usually i interview well! Hope this helps

Re: Need help with Interviewing questions!!!

In my experience I find conversational interviews and open ended questions that flow tend to tell me the most about the applicant.

Being they are a recent grad, they don't have much experience so you need to see if you think they are trainable, fast learner, responsible, etc.

I try to think of characteristics that I feel a qualified applicant should have and ask open ended questions around them. I also pick out things of the resume that I need clarity on or may point out specific parts of their character.

For example, I recruit for entry level PC support people. So I ask them how do they rate their problem solving skills, how do they go about solving a problem and to give me an example of how they have solved a recent problem they encountered. I can judge from that if they are logical thinkers.

I have a list of questions in a folder that I have used depending on scenarios - here are some that may apply to you and finance:

What do you expect to gain from this position? what can you offer this position? (I like to do this at the end of the interview to see if they listened to the job description (which I start every interview with) and can apply that knowledge to their answer)

Why did you choose XYZ as your career path?

Everyone always says they have great people skills - so I ask for examples.

What motivates you to get ahead/learn?

What are you personality strengths?

Career goals?

What one aspect of Computers, finance, etc. seems to interest you most at this point in your career?

Example of when they showed leadership?

What did they learn from their previous employer/internship, etc.

Biggest professional obstacle/challenge they have faced and how did they overcome it?
