I'm so sorry. I did a PubMed search on the disease, and it seems a lot of physicians publish one paper on the topic, but no one in the US stands out as a prominent expert.

That said, there's a researcher in Brazil that DOES stand out. He is a basic researcher (works with animal models, not patients). If there's anyone on earth who could probably give you advice on who your family should seek advice from, this would definitely be your man.

most academics are fluent in english, so if you write a short email asking for help on who he thinks could be of help in the US, you likely will get a reply if he knows of a good physician.
