Hubby's off Thursday's and Friday's so I'm thinking maybe we'll take a short drive for a reasonable and romantic (is that an oxymoron?) overnight somewhere...within 2 hours of NYC.
Any ideas?
Kel - sorry, we can't afford a *Tower Room* at Mohonk!!

Check `em out anyway...
I don`t know what kind of deals or rates they have during this time of year, but maybe they have something more affordable. I wish we could go back there every couple of months, but there`s no way we could afford that. I`m hoping we`ll be able to keep our intentions of going back every year to the same room for our anniversary.
But anyway, I`ll keep thinking of other places .. we stayed at some other 'tucked away' places that were quiet and romantic.

Check out the tourism board online...they have a lot of hotel suggestions..
If you are into winter sports, there is a bit of that, and the outlet shops, the Antique furniture stores, genreal store- with foods, canned goods, home crafts, etc.
See if you can find a place w/ a jacuzzi..there are a few places that offer that. I also have stayed at a B&B maybe 5 mintues away...very romantic, victorian, stained glass windows and a fireplace in the rokom.
Let me know if you need more details...

Newbieweds!! I need Valentine`s Day ideas....
Maybe Cape May, NJ. Not sure how far away it is from NYC driving time though. I haven't been there but my mom has and it looks so quaint and beautiful.

Kathi...
What about Newport, RI? It's a little further (3-4 hours from NY, I think), but it's very charming and has tons of B&B's to stay at.
For activities, you can tour the mansions, the restaurants are incredible, or you can drive along the coast and spy the many lighthouses.
Just a thought...good luck, and let us know what you decide!!

Newport
I always vote for Newport. We spent our honeymoon there after 9/11 caused us to cancel our Canary Islands trip. It's better in the spring/summer/early fall time frame because there are so many more things to do outside by the water. But the mansions are beautiful. We loved it there. Make sure to check on the visiting hours schedule at the mansions because this is off season. They also have several wineries/vineyards to visit. We went to the Newport Vineyardhttp://www.newportvineyards.com/newhome.htm - also we stayed at the Inn at Newport Beach http://www.innatnb.com/. It's right on the beach (across the street) at First Beach and has a view of water and Cliff Walk --which is another thing you can do.

Thanks all!! We`re leaning towards...
The Inn at Quogue. We really just want a *getaway* from the city and can`t go too far since hubby has to work Saturday.
Does anyone have any other recommendations on LI? I checked Gurney`s and they`re $400+! Egads. Suggestions welcome!!

Windjammer in Montauk
This was our first overnight trip several years ago early in our relationship. The rooms aren`t anything spectacular, but from what I recall, they do offer a decent view with a private balcony. What stands out in my mind, was the restaurant. I remember we got a late start going out there, and made it just in time before the kitchen closed. It was a Sunday in March, so we had the restaurant all to ourselves. It was so romantic. The restaurant is surrounded with big glass windows, and overlooks a body of water .. at night it`s really pretty. And the food was really good. We didn`t go out onto our balcony, which I remember as being on the small side, because there were a bunch of mosquitos or something.
They used to be in the Entertainment Book, so we were able to get a really good deal on the room .. we were only able to get away for one night. Luckily, the weather was nice the next day, and we went over to the Montauk Lighthouse and just sat on the rocks talking. I`m not sure what their prices are, but I seriously doubt they`re $400+! :) I`m pretty sure it was under $100pp (maybe $68??), including dinner .. but again, that was booked using the Entertainment Book. But still, regular rates at this time of year should be reasonable.
We had also heard good things about the Crow`s Nest, also in Montauk, but we never went there.
Checking around just now, I found this:

The rates seem pretty good .. and make sure to click on 'Sunset Point'

Kel! Mohonk!!
I just checked their site again (it looks so beautiful) and they have a Valentine's Day special for $200!!! WOOHOOOOOOO!!! It includes the room, 4 course dinner and breakfast!! I can't wait until Steve gets home to show him!!
We would have spent close to $200 on dinner alone if we stayed home in Manhattan (dinner @ *One if by land...*) Ack! We just spent $350 last Friday taking my best friend & her hubby to Morton's (yum!) for their anniversary!!
Anyway, I really hope we can go!! YAY!

Kathi!
That`s one of the beauties of Mohonk ... they include meals .. so on the surface, it may seem expensive (which it still is), but it is so worth it when you get your meals along with the room. Are they giving you breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and cookies, and dinner? Or breakfast and dinner? We never made the tea and cookies either day, and only stopped in for a quick bite one afternoon at lunch time. Make sure you check with them what the times are for the meals.
Which room were you thinking about? We had a tower room with a mountain view, which was really nice. The one thing I wasn`t aware of when booking a mountain view, was we were right over the valet drive up. The parking lot, where you can self park, was just below from the valet drive up, so there was some activity .. but nothing major. I`m sure no matter which view you book for, it will be great.
I`m so glad you looked into them again! I know you`ll love it there .. it`s just that kind of place!

We're going!!! ;-)
I just made reservations. It includes dinner & breakfast which is great. We'll drive up earlier in the day and have a light lunch somewhere in the area!
The room is kind of a *house* choice based on what's available. They asked me my preference and I said mountain view or lake view so we'll see. I'm sure it will be nice either way.
I'm really excited since we need a little break!! Thanks!!
By the way, did you use any of their spa services? Just curious...thinking of getting Steve a massage.

Yipee!! I`m so excited for you!! :D
I know you`re going to have a great time! We were also told we would get a 'house' choice based on what was available when I booked our honeymoon, but we did make the choice of tower room with a mountain view. Luckily we got the top floor .. which we thought was just perfect! The higher the room, especially if you get a mountain view, the better .. in my opinion.
As for the spa, we didn`t use any of the services. We were only there a short time and stuck with outdoor activities. We arrived late on Monday, ordered room service, built a fire and sat on the balcony. On Tuesday, we had breakfast brought to our room, went for a walk just to look around, had some pictures taken of us by other guests from in front and by the lake, took a boat out on the lake, quickly stopped in for lunch, went horseback riding, then went on a hike to the sky tower. We got back for sunset and watched it from the balcony, built another fire and had dinner brought to our room. We unfortunately had to leave early Wednesday unexpectedly, and left after having breakfast brought to our room.
If the weather holds out for you, I would definitely recommend going for a walk up to the sky tower. We took the carriage path up, which took maybe an hour, but it was a nice, easy walk and gave us plenty of together time. There`s a shorter path, but it`s a tougher walk and was a much busier trail than the one we took. We did take the short trail back, and got down in about 15 minutes! But, there were a lot of people on this path.
Bring your camera and extra film! And most importantly, ENJOY!! :)
