Newest Newlyweds!

Did you bring your gown to be cleaned and preserved? Is cleaning and preserving the same thing? It'll be 4 weeks now, and I guess I should bring it somewhere soon. My cleaners has a sign that they do wedding gowns, but not sure if I should bring it there. What are you doing?

I have been married for 4 weeks as well! I have not brought my gown anywhere to be cleaned yet- but my local cleaner offers gown preservation and cleaning, I asked about it. They say it will stay white as long as it is in the box, I think I will bring it there.

Welcome to the sane side!!! Congratulations!!!

As for the dress, mine is still sitting in my old room, filthy as can be, waiting for me to bring it to the cleaners!! And I've been married for 9 months already!! If anybody knows of a place in Queens, let me know!!!

Our groomsmen and dads got their tuxes through VIP Tuxes. Since they had gotten 9 tux rentals, I got a certificate to have my dress cleaned, preserved, and boxed for free. I took them up on it. I took it to them on May 25th, the day we came in from our honeymoon because there is no room in our house for it. The guy told me to expect it to take a month. Well, it’s almost 2 months and I haven’t heard a thing. I am starting to get nervous, so I plan on stopping in on Saturday to see if I can get a status check on it. I hope I did the right thing.

I got mine cleaned through the bridal boutique where I purchased it. I'm sure they send it out to somewhere they trust. Another good thing was that they fixed some beading for me that had come loose so I was able to put it away clean and in perfect condition. They also cleaned my veil and it was put in the same box. It may or may not get worn again (not by me of course!!) but I couldn't see not getting it preserved after all I spent and I may have a daughter or one of my nieces may someday love it. Call your bridal boutique and see if they offer a similar service. My place was Bonaventure in Garden City. Chemlengr-definitely give them a call. This is a popular time of year for weddings so that may be the cause of the delay.

Re: Newest Newlyweds!

Mine's being done right now. My mom brought it to my MIL's cleaners (My MIL is the seamstress there and both of her bosses were at the wedding) - so they better do a good job!

Most cleaners don't do it onsite - they actually send it out somewhere. Wouldn't surprise me if they all go to the same place.

Mine will be cleaned and boxed up - its was around $150? Price varies depending on the dress, length of train, beadwork, etc.

If you're going to do it, sooner is better than later. The longer the dirts stays on there, the harder it is to get out. Also, sweat eats away at the dress over time and when you do finally get it cleaned, the sweat damage is evident.

Re: Newest Newlyweds!

I took my dress to my local dry cleaner in Queens. I paid $150. They cleaned it 3 times before all the dirt was taken out. I could not believe how dirty my dress was by the end of the night...I was horrified. I took the dress in right away to be cleaned. I was and am a little nervous about how they 'preserved' it. What they did is after they cleaned it I came to check it out, after three times I finally gave my approval to box it up. They folded it it in half and the top part of the dress is shown through a window in the box. That box is then wrapped in a blue bag and then that box is suffed into another box. I don't remember what's inside. So in other words I can always get to my dress and take it out. Is this bad? I always hear how when you preserve a dress you are never able to open it up unless you want to get it preserved again.

Elizabeth- You did a great thing by getting the dress fixed first. I wish I did that. Some of my beading came off too. But then again I don't know if I would have ever gotten my dress back since I bought it at Saymels in Astoria. The store shut down about a year after I was married. How tragic is that, all the brides standing outside the store trying to get their dresses and the bridal party dresses!!!

My best friend used her grandmothers dress for her wedding. This dress was not dry cleaned or preserved after the wedding, which was fifty years ago. So the dress had a wine stain and it was aged. My friend wanted the dress no matter what. Her grand mother paid $50 for this too. It had the super long train....and my friend is 5 feet tall. She had her mother apply applique to the wine stain and to other areas to make it look like a simlpe design. It turned out fine. She incorporated the antique look of the dress into her party favors, flowers, and head peice. Let's just say if any of your grand kids or great grand kids really want to wear your dress they will find a way!!
