Newly married & confused about health insurance?

Does anyone know what benefits dual coverage give you?

Help, I am sooo frustrated.

Re: Newly married & confused about health insurance?

If there are any drawbacks it would be great to know that too.

P.S. This is my first post to the newlywed board.

Re: Newly married & confused about health insurance?

do you each have your own coverage right now? i only ask because sometimes it is less expensive to keep single coverage than to add another person onto a single insurance acct. that is what happened in our case.

Re: Newly married & confused about health insurance?

This is the thing w/us. We both have medical & dental. My Medical is better so he is coming onto my policy. We were going to drop his medical. However his dental seems to be tied in w/his medical and his dental is much better than mine. We wanted to add me onto his dental but we don't know yet if we can w/out me being added onto his medical also.

I just want to understand how dual coverage works since we may not have a choice if I want his dental plan also.

I am soo frustrated.

Re: Newly married & confused about health insurance?

have your husband talk to his HR person, they should probably be able to help you work it out. every plan is different...it is very confusing at times. for us dental is sep. from medical so you can choose one or the other or both. it is a pain, but good luck!

Re: Newly married & confused about health insurance?

My husband is a full time student in Grad School for his MBA. So, I have him listed as a dependent and he gets everything I get: medical, dental, vision...

I agree you need to talk to the HR person at each company to help you determine what would work out best. Every plan is different.

Generally, for indemnity health plans, if you have dual coverage, usually one plan will be the primary plan were you would submit claims first and then what's not covered by your primary plan (e.g. co-pays) may be covered by the secondary plan. But, sometimes one plan may not provide benefits in addition to another plan and therefore it would not be beneficial for you to have dual coverage.
