Newlywed - Car insurance problem

Newlywed - Car insurance problem

I have a perfect driving record but my new husband has an old dui from 8 years ago and a speeding ticket that he paid late...they are saying his license is revoked but he is working on getting it back. I am changing my name to his - started the process today - and was just going to change my name on my insurance. I wasn't planning on having him associated at all with my insurance company - we were keeping everything separate...but my agent says if he changes my name, just the fact that I am married to him, my insurance company may drop me! I can't believe it! My record is perfect, and now just by marrying my husband, it means nothing! Has anyone else ever gone through this?? I don't know what to do - I am so upset.

I haven't ever heard of that, but I can see how it's possible. If they look up the last name, they would see all the records.

My husband and I are keeping everything separate for now, also, so I didn't even go thru the hassle of changing the name on the policy. I would just leave it in your maiden name for now. Is it necessary to change your name on the insurance policy?

I personally, would just leave it in your maiden name.

Never heard of that.... when i changed my name on my car insurance policy nothing was asked of DHs info... he is no part of my policy!!! I acutally got a small discount for being MARRIED.

What company are you using... I know some dig for info that they shouldnt ... just to get you for higher prices...

When your married, your marry your significant other's driver license......therefore, yes it can cause a problem in the insurance world...unfortunately.

Why??

Well, simple, you are married...he will use your car, you will use his..or can.

The only thing is that the DUI should not affect him anymore since it in the past. They only look at it if its a major violation within 5yrs. Its the speed ticket that may be holding him up.

I work in the ins business. HTH! GL!

Wow! I'm kinda in the same situation. My DH also has an old DUI from a long time ago. I'm worried about the same thing. What insurance do you have? I have Geico and I know they can be a bit picky about who they insure, but I don't want to change from them since my record is good and they're giving me a good rate. Now I'm thinking I should not even tell them about my name change.

I think even if you don't change your name once the insurance company finds out your live together and married they will add him to your policy (at least that is what happened with us) this happened when it was time to renew the policy. Like the other bride stated the DUI shouldn't be a problem now....have you tried contacting different INS companies?

agree.

a few years back, i had a roommate. and when i moved in, her insurance changed because there was another person with a drivers license in the house. the fact that you could possibly drive his car or he yours is the thing.

i would look elsewhere

My husband got added to my car insurance when he had a slight fender bender in my car. Since then, my insurance went up considerably becuase his license was suspended 3 years ago. I hate insurance companies!!!
