Not the best way to start out the year

Not the best way to start out the year

I went back to work last week after taking a couple of days off for the New Year, and I was greeted with my walking papers. I was let go after two years at my job. Let me correct that- one month shy of two years (which means they only gave me one month of severence, not the two I feel I deserved).

Anyway, I spent my first full day at home today and I almost died from the silence. I had to watch Jennie Jones just to hear voices (albeit they were mostly lunatics).

Hubby has been so comforting and supportive. He knew that I didn't like my job very much anyway, and he has told me that I should take as much time as I want to figure out what I really want to do with my life. Any ideas?

I am going to take advantage of this time by cleaning our apartment from top to bottom, working out, reading, and thinking about what I want to do.

Are there any teachers out there? I would love to speak with you. Also, I enjoyed planning my wedding so much and put so much effort into it, that everyone thinks I should be a wedding planner. Are there any of you out there as well??? Any suggestions you have would be much appreciated.

Not the best way to start out the year

Hi Rosie!
I am also unemployed since 3 weeks ago. I`ve worked as a consultant so we expect our projects/work to end at any time. I have to say one thing, I always thought 'what would i do' if i was home all day ? thinking I would be bored to tears... Well, i never realized that even being home all day, 'there isnt enough time in a day!' I have also been cleaning and organizing my house. Organizing closets, the attic, etc.

I`m also at the point of 'what should i do with my life'. Years back, I had taken some credits towards a MAsters in Education and i`ve thought about completing that... How is the job market for teachers out here ? Does anyone have inside info on that ? I`ve also been exercising in the mornings, and getting alot more things taken care of than if i was working...
Enjoy your time off ! Visit some friends that might be SAH moms, go shopping one day..and focus on your home like you have decided to...

Its so weird how when youre at work you can come up with a list of things to get done after work, and i am home and sometimes say to myself 'what do we need, what has to get done?' So one habit i`ve gotten into is to have a notepad around, and one i use to write things we need to buy: ie laundry basket, humidifier, etc and one i use to write down projects I want to get started on..painting or shelving, etc. So just always jot down things as they come to you......

sorry if i rambled there...Lots of luck to you ! ENjoy some time off !

Not the best way to start out the year

Hi!

I'm a 2nd career teacher and I highly recommend it. I worked in advertising and as a paralegal for 5 years (I got into law school and realized it wasn't for me)and I decided to teach. I've been in grad school for education for 2 years and I'm now teaching middle school (It's my first year teaching). I really love it.

Why don't you e-mail me and I can give you details if you'd like -
[email protected]

good luck!

Wedding Planning

I too was bit buy the wedding planning bug and have decided I want to take a crack at it myself. I am taking at home correspondance course through harcourt learning. You know those cheesy commercials you see on tv on how to get a better career. :-)
Anyway I can give you more info on that if you are interested.
I do have a job but I don't see myself here forever.

Sara/Stephanie-thanks for offering your email address, I think i'll email you some questions about teaching...

Rosie and Stef - good luck with the wedding planning, that is something there will always be a need for ! Even if you just start out doing it as a side job (since Stef mentioned she is currently working) and it progresses to something big, thats great !
When I was house hunting 2 years ago, I had wanted to get a RE License and do that on the side...hmmmm.. maybe i should look into that !

lots of luck in whatever you ladies decide to pursue !

Not the best way to start out the year

Just to give you some encouragement, losing my job was the best thing to happen to me. My new job pays a lot more than my previous one, the work is more fulfilling and it has more growth potential. It also allowed me and hubby to relocate closer to family and we're finally buying a house.

If you can afford to take the time, don't jump into the first job that comes along. Take the time to find one that's right. Whenever I hear of someone job hunting I'm reminded of a friend of mine that quit her job one spring and spent the summer doing some soul-searching and research and waited to find the perfect job in the fall - something that really suited her. So don't rush into something just to have a paycheck because the right job will be there if you take some time to find it.

Rosie,

I too have the same problem, however I came back from my honeymoon after my Oct 6 wedding to find out I was laid off while I was away. Technically my last day there was Oct 31st and I have been looking since.

The first few weeks were the roughest for me I think, but things have picked up a bit since Jan 1, so hopefully something will come along soon.

Although I was miserable at my job and this is probably a good thing in disguise, I can say that I resent it spoiling my ''newlywed'' bliss that I am supposed to be in because this is certainly hampering our romantic life .. since I lost my job I can honestly say with all my worrying that I am not in the mood at all.

Good luck, thankfully I believe everything happens for a reason.

Teaching

Hi, I was just browsing and saw this thread (I should be on the other board)

I'm a teacher and the market is actually great for them now...When I first started school for it (1993) IT WAS HORRIBLE, but there have been SOOO many retirements. (45% of my district has been in the district for 3 years or less)

It is a tough job though!!! And there are so many more responsiblities today and law suits going around (a teacher 2 years ago was sued for $15,000 for not following a special education procedure) The first few years are very tough! I have been teacher for almost 5 years and it does get easier, but I still take home a lot of work...

THings also depend on the school district. I started in the City and LOVED teaching...I couldn't think of leaving it (I actually got my masters in counseling and decided not to pursue it because I loved teaching so much) but then I switched to LI for the money and I HATE it...at least my particular district...

if you have any questions email me [email protected]

My new Game show career

Thanks for all your posts! It's nice to know that I'm not alone, but terrible to hear that after getting back from your October 6th wedding, you still haven't found a job, Kim.

I actually haven't started to look for a job yet. I am trying to figure out what I want to do. But I do have some funny and promising news. While watching some daytime tv a few weeks ago, I saw a commercial for the Weakest Link audition in NYC. Well, with my free time, I went. Last night I received a call from one of the producers and they said they like me and want to fly me out to LA for a taping of the show! Isn't that hysterical!!!!!!!??? If I still had my old job, I never would have been able to go to the audition, let alone fly out for a taping! Things do happen for a reason.
