***NWQOTD Monday 8/2/10***

Original post by Clover23

And a happy monday morning to you all! I'm not usually this happy on Mondays but I'm off on Thursday and Friday

So here's today's question...

I've noticed this is a point of disagreement amongst my girlfriends, so i'm throwing it out to y'all. We've all been at the point, or will be, where we are looking to buy our first home/apt/condo/etc. If your parents, or DH's parents offered to give you SIGNIFICANT monetary help (loan or gift) to make it happen, would you take the money or wait until you could do it on your own?

I think for us, if the offer came from DH's parents, we wouldn't take it. I'd feel like there was too much potential for there being 'strings attached' and they'd constantly make it known that we wouldn't have done it without their help. If it were my parents, we'd probably accept the help. Ideally this is something we'd want to do on our own, without help, but the reality is that with my law school and his grad school loans, savings has been slow. And there's only so long we can stay in MIL's house.

I would take it because I would consider it a gift. I know this would never happen though

We paid for our own wedding. Our parents gave us very large monetary gifts to put toward the bill of the wedding & our new home. We were very lucky to have very very generous guests. We are also older (35) so we have more saved then the norm. couple starting out. So with all of that we didnt have problems excepting gifts from our parents. We know they just want us to have it all & that there would never be strings attached at all. We are every lucky & very thankful.

If this happened, we would accept it. My parents are extremely generous and want to help us as much as they can. The way they see it, the money is going to be ours when all is said and done anyway, so why wait if we need help. That being said, we already own our townhouse, which I bought on my own in 2003.

I would take if from my parents without even thinking but unless they win the lotto that isn't happening. From DH's dad, never in a million years. He would think it meant he had the right to a key and to come and go whenever he wanted. He's nutso!

Neither my DH's family or mine have any money. In fact, WE help THEM out with money all the time, lol
