NWR: Looking for job help

NWR: Looking for job help

I am a teacher who was laid off in June due to budget cuts. I have certification in students w/disabilities gr1-6 & literacy birth-gr6. I had prov cert in elem ed but did not persue perm cert b/c I wanted perm cert in spec ed instead. We currently live right outside of New Paltz, NY in Ulster County. I have been struggling to find any kind of job - much less a teaching job in the area - so now I am looking towards working in NYC.

My DH currently has a knee injury & does not have much sick time to use. Depending on how things play out over the next week or two - he may end up having to go for surgery - which means he would be out of work for a few months. His disability insurance doesnt kick in until 3 months of being off of work - which means we'd be soley livng off my measly unemployment & whatever savings we have from our wedding.

I'd really like to try & get some type of job - at this point I dont care if it's not teaching - it would be great if I could stay in the teaching field - but I need to do something - I do have experience in administrative work - worked for Shelter Island Yacht Club as an office asst, Symbol Technologies as admin asst, - and also worked for United Health Care up in Kingston as admin asst/cust serv. If anyone knows of anything open that they can suggest or recommend - both myself & DH would be most grateful as we struggle through this difficult time.

In advance - thanks to all who take the time just to read this - & thanks even more to those who can help.

while you look for a more full time job. have you ever thought about looking into part time training jobs. . there are a lot of private literacy programs that send out trainers (like read 180, balanced literacy etc) and they hire full time, part time trainers a lot. . think of all the programs etc you used as a teacher and then all the folks that train on them. .

good luck

Re: NWR: Looking for job help

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I was unemployed at one point for approx. 5 months when I was laid off so I know it can be very difficult. I went on craigslist and a really helpful site is http://www.nyc.gov. I was a prior NYPD officer myself and I'm currently returning back to the department. For NYC jobs, that would be the best site to go since it list everything from civilian, uniform, healthcare, teachers...give it a try. I'll keep a look out for you if I come across anything that matches your interest & bkgd. Hang in there and keep looking!
