NWR: Paying Extra Taxes to be Married??

NWR: Paying Extra Taxes to be Married??

Since we are moving, I updated my address with HR and they told me to fill out a new W4 form for 2007.

After calculating the Two Earners worksheet, it appears that I will have an additional $150 taken out of EACH paycheck. Since the info will be the same for my husband, does this mean we will be losing out $600 a month for being married?

CPAs and tax attorneys, please advise!!! Do we really need to pay the govt. $600 a month to be married???? INSANITY!!!!!!

Thanks!!

whaaaaaaat/!?!

I thought being married was an EXEMPTION and actually SAVED you a few bucks from each paycheck

I'd definatly call up the accountant about that

Yeah i thought so too. You should be getting more money not losing money. It is an exemption

my suggestion, keep withholding at the single rate on your w-4...then when you file as married filing joint, you will get more money back with your tax return

If you want the money during the year, you can claim married 0 or married 1 on your w-4 but then you may owe at the end of the year. I am a CPA, btw

That's what I am doing.

Talk to your CPA/tax advisor for the best route for you.

Hmmm...I re-did my W-4 and i m getting like $35 more a paycheck. I claimed married 0. You shouldn't be getting back less, but more.

Yup this is my suggestion too. I do personal income taxes, and I tell ppl who are married and have no children, that they should remain as '0' on their exemptions. When you combine two incomes, it means your joint income could put you in a higher tax bracket, and therefore you have to pay more tax.

Everyone is different...either claim zero and have less in your paycheck, BUT get a good tax refund at the end of the year....OR claim 1 (Married) and you probably won't have much of a tax refund, but wiill most likely have to owe money at the end of the year.

i am claiming O and married. but the two-earner worksheet tells me to:

lower wage job - find # in this table
higher wage job - find $$$ in other table

multiply # and $$$ and that is the additional amount that will be withheld from my paychecks.

is everyone saying that I should just not calculate this section at all? and not ask for any additional withholdings BUT run the risk of having to pay the govt when i file taxes? THANKS everyone!

This is the form I filled out. How are you ladies calculating that you are getting MORE back each paycheck?

Please help .

THANKS SO MUCH!

Unless you and DH have tons of other investments I would ignore page 2 of this Form and just fill out the bottom portion on page 1.

If you want the money during the year, claim married 1 or 2 on line 5 but then you may owe at the end of the year. If don't want to run the risk of owing then claim 0 on line 5 and you'll get a refund if you overpaid anyways. Also, you are allowed to change you exemptions at anytime durning the year, so don't stress it right now.
Btw, I'm a Tax Accountant.

I am married with 2 children. I prefer to have the money taken out now and get a refund during tax time. What should I put?

I don't know what you have it right now but I imagine you may have claimed 4 on your W-4. Just claim 2 on your W-4 Form and you'll have more $$ taken out per pay check but when you file your tax return you'll actually have 4 exemptions.
