I went there this morning to do the name change (luckily I was in and out pretty quick) but what a horrible, horrible place LOL
It was a cross between Rikers Island, and a homeless shelter. Every time I see the deductions in my paycheck, I will remember the wynos and the atrocious B.O. smell... LOL
Go first thing in the morning if you do... the office is open from 9-4. I got there at 8:40 and was out by 9:20 or so.

Yeah, I went to that office too, the place is very clean, but there were a few...probably drug addicts picking up their checks....but then you have regular working people trying to handle their business, it's best to go first thing in the morning. You can also bring your passport if you don't have a license.

Yep it is pretty bad. I had to stand there for a couple of hours in June. It was fun, fun, fun!!!!!!

no, i'm fairly certain its on the west side... like between 8th and 9th. i went there too, not fun but it wasn't scarey per se.

I went one day on lunch to change my name at the 48th St office, and after waiting practically the entire hour and hardly moving in line I decided to grab a form and mail my info into my local SS office (in Westchester County) to request a name change.
I had to send my original marriage license (which was a little worriesome) and a SASE, but it really went so smoothly I highly recommend it. I got back all my origianl docs in less than 2 weeks, and got my new card with my married name shortly thereafter. It was MUCH better than standing in line, trust me!

I had no problems with my Italian wedding certificate (which is not in English!!) - luckily the woman spoke spanish and could kind of read it LOL
The cross street is 8th Ave.
OH -- and if you live in BROOKLYN (as I do) be advised you must file in Brooklyn ONLY. When I found this out, I used my parents address instead. There was no way in heII I was going back to another ghetto office LOL

I tried the one on 48th during lunch but it was way to crowded so i'm going friday morning to the one in Hackensack, NJ where i'm living now.. I'm hoping it wont be so bad since it's not in the city

I went to the one up in Washington Heights and it was clean and there was very minimal wait. It's located at Broadway between 182nd and 183rd.
