NYC Teachers- UPDATED another question!

DH is applying to teach in NY but they want him to be certified before they will consider his application. What does he have to do to get certified?

ETA: DH has his bachelors degree in political science. He wants to teach high school physical education. Will he be able to do this even though his undergrad degree is not education and is different from what he wants to teach?

He needs to pass the test to get certified. If he is certified for another state, there are different things he needs to do to take the exam. For someone like me, I'm working towards my certification so I have to take other tests as well. I think he just has to prove his certification for another state then take the NY state test. Check out the NY State website. It's full of info.

Re: NYC Teachers

you need to be fingerprinted.

Take these 3 tests:
LAST
ATS-W
and a CST (depending on his major like if he is a secondary ed teacher he would have to take that test, if he is eled then he has to take the elementary test etc.)

then he has to have the scores sent to the dept of education

tell him to go to this website

Thanks! DOes his undergrad degree have to be in teaching?

Re: NYC Teachers

BA in education (unless he's applying to be a fellow)
All required courses/student teaching/exams successfuly completed
Evidence that he's at least filed for certification with NYS.
Fingerprinted

I have to warn you, jobs in NYC are going to be scarce. With budget cuts and 1400 teachers already in excess, it's going to be very competitive.

Good luck!!!

I believe yes, unless he's applying for the NYC Teaching Fellows or has a master's in Education. What's his subject area?

Is he certified to teach in any other state? Based on this question, I'm thinking no, so he will need to be certified by going to school. My undergrad or my masters are in education. I'm working on my second masters which is in education.

No he is not certified in another state and his undergrad is in political science.

I do not know specifics but I know that certain courses are needed for phys ed mostly science. Also I believe you need 18 education credits in addition to all the exams on stuff...

Maybe a post on LIF will be helpful

If he does not have an Undergrad degree in Ed, he has to take a Graduate program in Phys. Ed/Education. There are a LOT of science classes he'll have to take. Then, he has to be fingerprinted by the state and pass THREE exams, which are each only given a few times a year: LAST, ATS-W and the CST. It can all be done while doing a Master's degree.
