OMFG. Are you serious??? Are they certified to teach music and art?

I always loved music and art in elementary school because we got to get out of the classroom for a little while and it was always so much fun.

I dont teach k-2 but if I did, I think I would seriously scare a lot of kids with my singing!

What can we do to stop this? So sad.

what about the belief in HIGHLY qualified teachers? why does that not extend to art and music? so ridiculous. . I think eliminating art/music in our schools will be a disaster

That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard!
What if it were reversed, could a music/art teacher really teach math or science the same way a certified math/sci teacher could???

WOW .....all I can say is that I honestly feel as someone who used to teach health & safety to K-6 as a push-in teacher for 2 years on LI and then lost my job b/c they phased that out so the classroom teachers could just add that to their daily curriculums, amongst the dozen other subjects - reg classroom teacher already spend days, nights, weekends planning - if they do this, #1 not only is it a disservice to the students & CERTIFIED art & music teachers, but it's also putting added pressure on regular ed teacher to now find more time during the day, night, weekend to plan & learn another 2 curriculums....when does the madness stop? We think that test scores are low now? Wait if this actually becomes a reality - Teachers are constantly losing time in the classroom for assemblies, field days, holidays, birthdays, etc - and now add to their list music & art....I am just as outraged by this as you Lauren, and wish there was more we could do to stop all the dumb a$$es in our govt from making all these cuts and changes.....

They are going to give teachers 12-15 credits of music/art training..yeah that's enough..if it was I would have gotten both degrees for only 15 credits each! AGH!

It just makes me so angry. I knew when i went to school for music that most people dont udnerstand/appreciate my job and that it would be a struggle, but i didnt realize quite how much of a struggle i was getting into!

Yeah, it has def been getting worse in schools. . have you considered teaching at private schools at all? I've been in public schools all my career and think the kids DEF need music but at some point it's also about you feeling appreciated by staff and I know some private schools are MUCH better at valuing music/art teachers.. esp in places like Waldor/Montessori etc. . .

I teach k-2.... tell me when the f@@@ We are supposed to teach that!!! We already have enough on our plate!! besides our ability is limited!! It wouldn't be the same!!

That's just disgusting!!
Not for nnothing.. i bet we wouldnt even get paid for the training!!
