Re: ok what do you change first...
start with social security - you'll need it for DMV, etc.

Re: ok what do you change first...
My MOH used a name change kit. Said it helped her so I guess I'll give it a try!
Have you seen those lines at the SS office Makes you want to holler. I will get around to it one of these days. Hubby just hyphenated his last name, so we have to go to County Clerk's office to get our marriage license in that name, before we can even move forward. I did not want to do anything with his old last name, which our marriage license is in. Then when we go to do everything else, with the new name, I have to do everything a second time. No way will I be caught in that SS office twice

Re: ok what do you change first...
I purchased that...all it is, are the forms that you would get from the offices that you would go to, to get all your documents changed. I felt cheated, especially when one of my BM told me that the forms were online

Kim, it depends on which office you go to, I am in the city, so there might be a difference. If you can get the forms and fill them out before you get there, that might expedite your time there

A small bit of advice about the SS office - try to get there as soon as they open, or just before they close. These tend to be the slowest times. Also, make sure you get into the right line once you're there. The name change line is usually short, and only takes a few minutes.
For DMV, if possible, make an appointment online before you go down there. It saves time. Also, bring along a book and read while you're online. That's what I did and the time flew...(but, I only waited 15 min. b/c I made an appt online)
And, you can find most of the forms you need on the Internet.

Re: ok what do you change first...
SS first and like Claud said, get there either first thing or last thing. I was in and out of there with no problem -- as for DMV, I've posted about my nightmare once before and I'll spar you all the details, but I JUST got my license back 2 weeks ago and I will be married one year on Sunday. I put that nightmare off until July and it was the worst hour of my life (and if I was there a minute longer I would be in jail) and I put it off again until September and got out of there only half pissed off. Word of advice: if you're changing your registration, you will need your title -- there seems to be some discrepancy w/that because I know a few people who didn't need it, but I did. Mind you, my car is 13 years old (mint condition, I might add -- I love my baby) and was paid off in 1994, but I never rec'd a new title w/o the lienholder on it, so it was a big rigamaroll and I had to give them my original title and original 'paid' off thing and then they are supposed to send me a new title w/my new name, but the LIEN HOLDER STILL ON IT!! The DMV doesn't know what the heck they are doing and are so aggrevating.
Ok, I'm sorry -- I'm going to go on and on about them and I'm being told to get up and out since we're having a fire drill here and I'm the Deputy Warden (don't ask) and I have to go make sure everyone is lined up. Whatever.

Re: ok what do you change first...
I started with DMV (I didn't need SS changed for DMV) because that's the ID you always need to have most often. Then I worked outwards from there.

Re: ok what do you change first...
Just got back from the Melville SS office and I was in and out of there in 5 minutes! There was no one else waiting there and I went with the forms already completed (printed them off internet). Painless!

I went to Melville too and there was no one there - in and out in 5 minutes. But I didn't have to fill out any forms at all. Just handed them my old card. I already have my new one.
