I was reading up on dangerous toys for Xmas but some of the reasons are just down right stupid! Look I agree that yes we need warning labels, but common sense must be a part of the process. For example, toys with little parts. There was some toy on tv they were saying was unsafe, it was some stupid little dog with a dog house and a food dish with doggie bone. They are saying its an unsafe toy because the bone is small can could be a choking hazard. Well, I saw on the box that the toy came in clear as day for 5yrs and up! What does that tell you? Sometimes theses TV warnings and articals just scaring parents from buying the toy, thinking there might be lead paint or something like that. When its just a stupid bone that a toddler should not have. There are toys made for older kids who are suppose to know not to stick small toys in their mouths. There has to be some level of responsibility. If the box says 5 and up, it shouldn't be in the hazard list, just because a toddler can't play with it. If thats the case I would like to see cell phones, I-pods, computer equipment, etc.. be put down as hazardous to children. By the same defention as they attack the toy dog. If a three yr old can choke on it or its parts, than why not! The toy company put on the darn box for 5yrs and up!!!!! that should be enough for parents to realize this is not a good toy for a three yr old! Sorry, I needed to rant!

I agree with you. That reminds me of something I heard this weekend that I thought was also ridiculous. My little sister-in-law said her elementary school took down their swings because a kid jumped off of them and broke his arm, and apparently the parents threatened to sue or something. I completely understand why they are upset that their child got hurt, and I realize how swings can be dangerous - if kids jump off of them at high speeds!!! But I just think it's sad for all the other kids at the school that now they won't have swings because one kid jumped off of them even though he probably knew he wasn't supposed to.

I'm not trying to bump, but Grace you know, maybe schools should make a play ground safety video. You would think that would be something kids should watch. Do they have them? I don't remember seeing any when I was in school.

that is a good idea! I would think that even if they don't have safety videos, that the teachers and recess aides must explain safety to the students. I really do understand how swings and certain toys can be dangerous, but I agree with you that it's sad that things just keep getting taken away because people don't use them properly.

Remember when someone got burned when they spilled McDonald's coffee on themselves?
There was a big to-do that there had to be a warning on the coffee cups that the contents were hot? Duh....yes, coffee is hot....

While i agree about that they blow things out of proportion --- just thought I'd share this about the lady that filed suit against McDonalds (she was 81 years old and needed skin grafts). Mcdonald's knew the coffee was way too hot and was injuring people but they didn't bother to change it until someone got seriously hurt. She sued them because they offered to give her $800 settlement--- her medical bills were in the thousands.
'McDonald's consistently keeps its coffee at 185 degrees, still approximately 20 degrees hotter than at other restaurants. Third degree burns occur at this temperature in just two to seven seconds, requiring skin grafting, debridement and whirlpool treatments that cost tens of thousands of dollars and result in permanent disfigurement, extreme pain and disability to the victims for many months, and in some cases, years.'
OUCH

by the way -- I'm a teacher and I can tell you that kids older than five put things in their mouths all the time. Last year a boy in my class nearly choked to death on a DIME HE WAS SUCKING ON. Why did he feel the need to suck on a disgusting dime? I don't know and neither did he.. He had just turned 7 at the time. Kids do stupid things all the time.
Also, a toy may be purchased for a 5 year old but his 18-month-old brother or neighbor or friend might get his hands on it.

I am one of those people who do not blame others. If my kid jumped off a swing set and broke his/her arm its my kids fault unless they are very young and they should have supervision when on the playground. Accidents happen! I remember some mother screaming at the bus driver because the bus didn't stop and sit long enough for her fat *** and her lazy fat kid to walk out of the house. I remember walking down the block to my stop - why should the bus driver sit there waiting for you because your late.
Coffee - its hot, and yes people we shouldn't put it inbetween our legs when driving. Your an idiot if you do it and if you spill it and burn its your own fault. If the attendant handing it to you spilled it on you then you have a case but otherwise your issue.
Baby toys, so hard to tell at times. You do have appropriate age groups on packaging but you need to know the child's emotional age as well. Saying a toy is horrible because it has a small part is a sign that you as a parent didn't read the package, examine the contents and/or had taken the time to figure out if this toy is appropriate for your child.
I just can't stand how people take things to court, like the case in Wallmart. Why sue the police? Should they have yelled and pushed the crowds even more so so that then you would of heard oh the police are harassing us! Maybe you should of been decent human beings and not rushed through the door like a herded pack of animals and realized that you were trampling on a human and not a toy!

There is always the kid who might be a little slow. And as a parent, people need to know there kids. If there kid gets a gift with small part, then the parent needs to be the one to take the small parts away. And your right, sibblings and friends should be factored in. But thats also part of being the parent. If you have a 2 yr old and your six yr old likes to leave his toys on the floor where his sister can get a hold of them, then yes, I can understand them resiting those toys.
