omg I totally didn't know this...(Unemployment related)
they make you go to a 'seminar' type thingy and then you have to do a one on one interview? omg...as if I didn't feel bad enough about having to be on unemployment in the first place now I have to sit in a room full of people and listen to them talk about job skills like I'm some sort of degenerate that can't keep a job. UGH...I am sooooooo not happy about this. I didn't lose my job because I'm a bad employee...***!!!

do you have to do that right away? DH collected unemployment a few years ago and i don't think he did that. But he works for a carpenters union, so maybe he didn't have to? I can see them doing that if you've been collecting for a long time.

For someone like you, you probably won't have to sit through the entire thing. Just tell them that when you have your one-on-one interview. DH completely missed his seminar because he had an interview. The guy who interviewed him said it was fine, the seminar is targeted towards unmotivated ppl with no career goals and would be useless to him. Since DH was actively seeking employment, he was excussed.

Really? When i was on it about 7 years ago I had to fill out a form and put where I had placed applications, if i got a call back and then a small feedback. This was a monthly journal, it had taken me about two and half months to find another job.

Re: omg I totally didn't know this...(Unemployment related)
I JUST filed for unemplyment the first week of January. I've only recieved 1 check so far and they sent me the letter about that seminar with a form to fill out and bring in. I have never collected unemployment in my life and have never had a span of more than 2-3 weeks being unemployed. Usually if I leave a job its because I found something better so I just go str8 to the other job. Only time I was unemployed for a bit was when I quit my job in like 98 because I was so angry at my boss I didn't bother to wait and have something else lined up, but I didn't collect unemployment and it took me like 2-3 weeks to find something else.
I've been on 2 in person interviews and one second phone interview, plus I have that pre-screening interview on tuesday and I applied to about 20 places since I lost my job Dec. 26th....it's just taking longer than expected because in my industry nobody is hiring until Spring because of the recession and this is a dead time for everyone.

I dunno, I mean...I think it's great that they offer these things for people who don't have a job. But I guess I see it as being more geared towards those unmotivated people milking the system...which is deffinately not me. My pride is generally too high to recieve something like unemployment. I used to look at it as if it were a 'handout' and never applied for it because I was always confident on getting a job before the paperwork could even go through...but the way things are now...and how hard it is to get a job...I need to make sure my mortgage gets paid and that there is food on the table and a warm home for me and my hubby to come home to. I'd love to be more positive and say maybe I can gain something from it anyway...but I sincerely hope I'm not sitting there listening to them talk to us like silly babies about things that are common sense to me.

I heard there also courses offered to help you learn a different trade. I think it is great that there are classes you can take for free. I would take advantage of this bad situation. Good luck

yeah, That I am looking into about the online courses and such. I guess it sounds really bad but I hate that I have to go and sit with other people whose situation may be totally different than mine. I guess what I'm really afraid of is going in there and being mistaken for one of those people who are unmotivated and milk the system and having to sit in a room of quite a few of those people and be spoken to as if I am one of them. Do I sound horrible saying that?

I'm on unemployment right now and have not needed to go to any seminars at all. I've actually been on it for a while too, because my original job had cutbacks during the Summer & left me jobless. After that I was in Colorado with DH (my fiance at the time) and when I got back, I could only get a part time job until the Wedding (and was still able to collect unemployment during that time as well). Now that I'm settled in Colorado, I'm beginning my job search, but still collecting benefits in the meantime. So basically it's been like 4 months, and I've NEVER had to go to a seminar or anything. How weird is that??

Sounds like it might be a random thing - with the amount of people who are on unemployment now, it sounds like they are just trying to make sure it's done right and that they stop as many people as they can from milking the system ... so maybe they are randomly sending out those things, asking you to go to a seminar?? I haven't gotten one yet, but I only got all my info on Friday. No checks yet, I actually have to go on to their website today to tell them that I did not work last week.

Re: omg I totally didn't know this...(Unemployment related)
I've been laid off since August and this was also my first time unemployed. I had to go to the seminar. It's not bad. We sat in a room for about 30 mins and listened to them talk to us about our options on how to find work, classes that can be taken ( you won't need these...it's all ESL, Computer training, GED & PreNursing). They understand the economy is bad and aren't blaming us for losing our jobs, but still try to keep track of ppl. THere are some ppl out there takin advantage of the system. They do try and help some ppl find jobs. I didn't have a one on one...so I don't know what that's about.
ALSO, BRING YOUR RESUME OR THEY WILL SIGN YOU UP FOR A RESUME WRITING CLASS!!!

Yup, don't miss it either! They will stop your benefits if you don't go!
