We are going to be moving in a few weeks. We are probably hiring my friend's brother. He works for a moving company, which charges $85/hour for 2 men. But my friends brother offered to charge me $55/hour with one other guy if we hire him directly and not go through his company. What he does is he somehow just borrows the company's truck and uses it for his own jobs. So, this same friend told me that movers get pretty big tips - this was before I was going to hire her brother. But, if we are paying him cash, and he is just splitting what we pay him with the other guy do we still have to tip him? I mean, is it like hiring an owner of a company, who usually doesn't get tipped? I'm sort of seeing it like wedding tipping.

if you are not going through a company and paying him directly, I wouldn't give him a tip. Afterall, he will be pocketing the money. JMO

Re: Opinions please
Just one concern to mention -- if they are taking the truck off the books, how is insurance handled? Normally the company would provide some protections/guarantee...

That's a good point about insurance. I'm assuming there won't be any if it's off the books.

Re: Opinions please
One thing you should keep in mind..
Is he moving anything that is very valuable or expensive? Reason i ask if lets say he scuffs or breaks something, what do you do ? Will he be responsible for anything that might be damaged during the move. Going through the company, its all covered (most of the time)...

Just to warn you, the risk isn't just your stuff, but also the building. If your movers damage your old place, you will be responsible for the repairs.
I also thought about the insurance immediately...a few extra dollars can be peace of mind...
as for a tip...I had 3 guys...the bill was $750...we gave them $100...one was the owner...so I assume that the others would get $50each...

Re: Opinions please
We're mainly hiring him for the big, bulky, heavy stuff like boxes of books, dishes, and cds, bed, wall unit, dressers, sofa. We will be taking things like the computer, stereo, dvd player ourselves, and valuables like silver and jewelry ourselves.
I'm just hoping nothing breaks or gets damaged, or at least none of the very valuable stuff gets ruined.
