ahhhhh! It's so annoying to have to change your name! On my marriage license, I hyphenated my last name and my husbands last name. So now do I have to do that for everything else (SS card, Drivers license, passport, credit cards, etc, etc...)? Or can I leave everything as just my maiden name? Help! I'm so confused! And I'm afraid to change anything, because I think that then I'll have to change EVERYTHING!

Re: overwhelmed with changing my name
I was just going to post questions about changing my name...
On my marriage license, I kept my name and then went to social security and made it Nina as my first name and then my last name maiden name, DH's name.
NOW, DMV is telling me they need SIX points of identification to change it in that way! Is this for everyone? Ladies who just changed their name to their husbands, did you need these six points as well?
I have to change credit cards, bank accounts (which hopefully they let me do without the license), I have the social security card, and I need a few other things!!!
Did anyone else have this problem?
Thanks!

I hyphenated as well, and did wind up changing eevverything. You are right, once you do one, you have to do them all.
Having a hyphenated name seems to have its advantages, though, because I think you can keep your maiden name on alot of things and people wont think twice.
But, that being said, its not as hard as you think: SS Card - you can do over the mail Passport - also over the mail DMV - in person Credit Cards -over the phone Everything else will take a faxed copy of your marriage license.
dont feel overwhelmed

I needed only my marriage license and old driver's license for my hyphenated name.

Re: overwhelmed with changing my name
You can leave your maiden name on everything if you choose, even if your marriage license hyphenates the name. BUT, if you want to change it on your driver's license, open up a bank account together with your married name on the checks, or change it on your passport, then you must change the name on your driver's license and social security card.
There's a pecking order to changing your name: you must go to social security first, then your driver's license, then you can do everything else. Once you clear the first two hurdles, the rest is easy.
Edit: which is what y'all said and I'm slow to type today...

Re: overwhelmed with changing my name
I guess it is easy unless you are doing something non-conventional... Because I am being told I need 6 points and therefore, I am trying to get other things changed so that I can use them to change my license. Town Hall wouldn't let me change my name to Nina Maiden Married...

You have to go to court to make that change unfortunately in NY.
You can change just the last name and be Nina Middle Married or you can hyphenate and be Nina Middle Maiden-Married.

Re: overwhelmed with changing my name
i just needed my license and my marriage certificate to change my name at DMV---the license alone is 6 points--and the marriage certificate proves you have a legal right to change your name.
i swear i think some DMV offices are just different and stupid!

Yeah, Now I am wondering if they told me the right thing. My marriage license doesn't have my new name, thats the problem, it has my maiden name.
I can do what I want in NY - just alot of points at the DMV. I am not changing my middle name, just having two last names with no hyphen.

I still have to change my license. I knew we would be moving and I was too cheap to pay for the name change then the address change. I hope when I go these two are not working

Re: overwhelmed with changing my name
I think you have to make it hyphenated on everything now.
