Has anyone done this? What kind of paint would you use? Definitely need primer even if color before was dark?
I have 2 dark wood dressers and was considering painting them black (they are a bit worn) and adding new hardware to liven them up a bit. Also considered sanding them down and restaining them (which I have done before on a hutch).
Any info is needed, thanks!

Re: Painting furniture?
I am going to paint an old dresser white once the weather gets nicer. They do it all the time on Trading Spaces and HGTV shows. Just use a primer first. You can probably do a search on the TS chat board for lots of instructions and hints.

Re: Painting furniture?
I saw this article and thought of you, I do not know how much help it would be
I can't offer how-to's on the whole project, but I do know you need to sand it before you paint. A friend just painted her headboard, and it bubbled because she didn't sand it. The paint needs something to 'grab' on to. I was told that 150 grit sand paper would've worked.
Sounds like fun! Good luck.

Re: Painting furniture?
I have done this. I did it to an old bookshelf. Sanding is a must, and so it using a tacy (or it might me tacky) cloth to catch all the dust. Definately prime it too. You will need 2 coats of paint
I think dark wood to black is a good change - as opposed to dark wood to a light color. Good luck

Re: Painting furniture?
Oh I never mentioned the type of paint. I am not sure it matters. I had some left over off white / beige that I had used on closet doors. I think it was semi gloss. Any way it was fine. I think a satin / semi gloss/ gloss would be the best finish as you can wipe it if its gets dirty. I don't think flat cleans as well

Re: Painting furniture?
Thanks for the link Shamma.
I do see it on shows all the time but wondered if I needed a primer if the wood was dark originally!?
So you guys are saying I should sand it down, prime it, then paint it?
