Paris

Has anyone been there?

We're thinking of booking a trip to Paris in May as the second part of our honeymoon.

Any suggestions for what we definitely should do?

Anything we should keep in mind when booking?

Anything to avoid?

Thank you

I thought that it was really great buying the red big bus two day tour for $60.00 each because it takes you literally everywhere, Notre Dame de Paris, Palace of Versailles, Champs Elysee shopping etc.

I really recommend staying close to Champs Elysee though because youll be in the center of everything and can just walk. Tons of designer stores, many sights to see, and cafe's and resturants. We stayed at the Hlton in Paris and it was soo gorgeous, we loved it, and only a few blocks from champs elysee.

We just went in November. It was heavenly! We stayed in St. Germain...I highly recommend it.
We went for 5 days; it was a good amount of time.

What did you enjoy doing there the most?

Any tips or suggestions?

Re: Paris

I went in 2000.

Bring your walking shoes! I walked everywhere.

I loved Notre Dame. I took tons of photos & spent lots of time here. Eiffel tower too...do it during the day & at night.

I really liked the catacombs. The walk is creepy & I had never seen anything like that before. This was the 'different' thing that you should def look into.

Sacre Coure is in a great place...artist area surrounds it. Walk around & buy oranges.

I loved eating TONS of crepes on every corner. Lots of wine too. I've seen the wine I bought for $5 for $40 in NYC.

Take the boat tour...on the river...it's cheesy, but worth it.

I went on a side trip to the Palace of Versailles & some chateaus. Not sure if you can arrange this (I don't remember how far it was from Paris), but it was beautiful.

Again, shopping will be different because of our weak dollar. I'm not a big vacation shopper.

Have a great time!

Re: Paris

Also....for dinner...get a Zagats guide.

It's so hard to find the good restaurants vs the bad ones.

We ate a few times in the 'Moulin Rouge' area...at BAD restaurants, but a few times on the way there, we found really spectacular ones.

Also...

Spend lots of times in the cafes. This is an experience to be savored.

A must is to go to the Louve (spend at least a day here & the lovely park with children playing by the water with little sailboats).

The museums are truly beautiful. There is an outdoor sculpture one...really nicely done. Bring a drink & relax in the garden for a bit.

A cheap person's advice.
Often in Europe, you will get a SUBSTANTIAL student discount. We look younger. Even if you are not...just say that you are a student.

I love traveling!

forget the restaurants...... go to the cafes! oh the food is so yummy..... and keep drinking the house wine and the coffee....

whenever I plan a vacation, I buy an eyewitness travel book (about $25) for the city I am going to. within 40 min of reading it, you'll know the public transportation system, and which sites you want to see the most... Then you can choose what neighborhood you want to book a hotel.... just make sure the hotel is close to a central metro stop.

to book the hotel, read the reviews on tripadvisor.com You really get to know the good/bad/ugly.....

We went for our honeymoon this past November. We stayed in the Latin Quarter. We loved it. It has a much younger vibe and livelier night life than staying on the right bank. I would compare it to Greenwich Village whereas the Champs Elysees is more like the Upper East Side. Just something to keep in mind.

Places you HAVE to go to:
Piere Herme
72 Rue Bonaparte
they have the most decadent desserts!

The Cimetiere du Pere Lachaise
(a short metro ride away in Montparnasse)
Gorgeous cemetery where you can visit the graves of Jim Morrison, Isadora Duncan, Oscar Wilde, Chopin and tons more

The Catacombs
So creepy but fun!

Also take the boat ride, you get to see so much in a short amount of time.

Re: Paris

We went for our honeymoon in Sept 2007. Paris is extremely beautiful, we stayed next to Arc de Triomph, a few blocks from Champes-Elysse. I do not remember the name of the hotel, but if we nned it, FM me and I will dig it up for you. The best thing to do is to buy a book by Frommers and just follow it. This is what we did. There are a lot of hidden places in Paris and Frommers is very good at telling you where to go and what to do, The thing not to miss is a dinner cruise on Seine!!!! It is very romantic We literally followed Frommers step by step, plus we traveled all over France, so the book is very useful. FM me if you need more info

Re: Paris

we had lunch in Paris two Sunday's ago at this little cafe near the Eiffel Tower called Villa Coloniale. They speak english here and serve yummy french wine and amazing creme brulee. The food is good too! It's on Bd de Grenelle. Great for people watching too. They have little tables set up outside. Perfect right before sunset ;)

Thanks so much!

Thanks for the Frommer's recommendation; I'll definitely read that book.
I've also purchased Rick Steve's book about France.

Would you recommend any tours? The bike tour?

Any night life?
