I am going to send in the form and such for my name change on my passport. The USPS site says to send a certified copy of the marriage certificate. Can I just send the original certificate in - will I get it back as I did my birth certificate?
Thanks!

Re: Passport Question
Hummm I am not sure if you would get the original certificate back so I wouldnt risk it. What exactly would a certified copy of your marriage license be though? A notary signing the copy?

Re: Passport Question
I was looking this up - you can't have a notary do it in NY. I think I would have to basically get another copy (30 bucks) of the certificate.

Meaning town hall or a post office? I live on Staten Island now.

Re: Passport Question
do not send your original.. if you got your license from one of the 5 boroughs, it will cost you 15 bucks to get another copy..

You do need to send in your original marriage certificate with the passport application, no way around it. And yes, you do get it back in the mail. It sometimes comes in a separate envelope. No need to waste $15 unless you absolutely need another original.

Re: Passport Question
you can use the original, provided there is a raised seal on it that effectively 'certifies' it. and yes, you will get the original back.

Well, thanks for the info. I already sent away for the additional copy so I'm out the money but I'll have the extra copy just in case I guess.
