Whenever DH has a procedure he has always told them he is allergic to penicillin. He said his mother told him when he was little to say that. MIL swears she never told him that. When he was little he took amoxycillin (the bubblegum medicine) and he wasn't fine, no allergy. I told him this means he isn't allergic to penicillin, he says he doesn't want to say he isnt and then find out he is. I told him to talk to his doctor next time to find out. He has NEVER had penicillin before so he has no clue whether he is allergic or not! I am still going with no, he's not.

Re: Penicillin
As far as I know, I am too. My mother said I used to get really bad hives when I was little. Same thing with my boss's brother. We had this discussion not too long ago. I can't remember exactly what happened, but somehow a doctor gave him some and he ended up with a really bad reaction. You say your MIL never told him that though, but he thinks she did?

Re: Penicillin
Most people become allergic to it after a certain age, so if he wasn't when he was younger, he may be now. I had a reaction to it about 5 years ago, and it was the worst thing ever! My throat closed up and I couldn't breath...I found out I was allergic the hard way...
Edit to add.... your allergies change every few years.. so things you were allergic to when you were little can go away when you are older.

He swears he told her. His words to me, 'My mother always told me to say I was allergic to penicillin bc that's what she was told to say as a kid.'

I completely understand bc that has happened with both me and my mom. But the thing is, DH has NEVER had penicillin in his life. As a kid he has had to take amoxycillin which is a form of penicillin and he was fine then. If his mom told him this as a kid, yet the doctor gave this to him as a kid, what happened?

I am with you -- I doubt he is allergic. Who knows where he came up with that but the doctor can do a test to see. He will need to be careful though because if any other medical place has it on file that he is allergic they may never give it to him.

Yes, that's right, that's what happened to my boss's brother...his throat closed! That's what I was going to say too...I must not have always been allergic to it because I remember the pink bubblegum medicine. OMG, that's horrible...really scary! That happened to my father when he was younger. He used to go for shots and had such a bad reaction...his throat closed and he almost died.

But he doesn't have any recollection of actually having an allergic reaction? I would say I don't blame him but if not then I guess I'm with you.

Nope, never had one. He swears it's what his mom told him to say even though nothing has ever happened

Re: Penicillin
To rule out the allergy, he can go to an allergist and get it tested. That is what i did. There was a question as to whether I was allergic to penicillin, saw an allergist, and I am not. He can easily do the same.

Ditto for me, although my allergic reaction happened 2 years ago. My throat swelled shut and my dr told me to take Benedryl, don't go to sleep, and go directly to the ER if it got worse.

That's what I told him to do, but he doesn't want to. I rather know!

He says it's a hassle and will just keep telling doctors he's allergic

Re: Penicillin
I am allergic to amoxicillan (the pink bubble gum medicine) it's actually of synthetic form of penicillin. Because I am allergic to molds we somehow came to the conclusion that I am allergic to penicillin too but in actuality I have no clue if I am. All I know is that since I was young I always write that I am allergic to penicillin just to be safe. So I guess I should go to the allergist like a pp suggested but I will probably just continue to say I am allergic

If you are allergic to one type of antibiotic, the doctors consider you allergic to all of the antibiotics in the same family. So if you are allergic to amoxicillan, they won't want you to take penicillin.

That's the thing, you took amoxycillin and you were allergic. DH took it and he was fine. I really need to have his doc test him so we know!

Re: Penicillin
I'm allergic to Amoxicillin so since I found that out I say that I am allergic to Penicillin-my mom always told me I am allergic so I'm not going to try anything.
I actually have a hard time with a lot of antibiotics this past April when I had so much work done on my teeth, I got incredibly sick from the medication. Then I told the doctor I got sick and asked her to give me a different prescription and she asked if I was pregnant because I vomited.
