Pilates

Ok so who goes and who loves it? Ive dont a lot of research and it seems alot of celebs do it so I jumped on the band wagon and started myself!

I have been going once a week for 6 weeks and so far I really like it - feel a bit addicted. My gym only offers the class once a week -booo. I would really like to take it twice a week (on top of weight training, running, other cardio) but not sure if I should go to a studio or not.

I am curious about the pilates that use the machines...my gym has those classes too for additional $$ ofcourse.

OR should I just get a dvd and if so - which do you recommend? Thanks girls!

Re: Pilates

You HAVE to buy the Winsor Pilates DVD. I've been using it for years and it's amazing. It makes you lean and tone and everytime I start it back up again, I always see a difference in about 2 weeks.

I do the fat burning work-out, abs, butt & thigh and the 20 minute body work out. ALL of her tapes are amazing.

I LOVE pilates and when I lost weight this is what really helped. It also shapes your body and really makes it look different. I have the total body work out dvd and its an hour long and first you do abs, arms, thighs and hips. Its a great workout and saw immediate results.

I love Pilates...been doing it for years, both the mat and the reformer (machines). At one point I was up to 5 days week between the reformer and mat classes. IMO I feel like I get a much better workout from the mat, because the reformer helps you hold the positions, whereas with the mat its all your own strength. I enjoy the reformer though, just dont feel like I get as good a workout from it. Give it a shot though, you might like it.

Yelley...how many times a week did you do the dvd's? I hate doing dvd's at home...am much more motivated at the gym but as I said before...I feel a bit addicted. Is all of that on one dvd or two?

Re: Pilates

i actually did a dvd for about 3 to 4 months before our wedding...DEFINETLY trimmed me up in a nice lean way - i did this one :)

I actually LOVED it...the first few days was tough - but by the end of the first few weeks i felt my body get stronger, and i was doing the workouts in completion i liked it because every part of the body is done in 10minute increments...kept me from getting bored (i HATE slow workouts..i hear awesome things about the winsor pilates tapes(supposed to be the most hardcore) but apparently it's really long & super slow)...i also liked it because if i woke up and didn't have enough time to get the whole 40minutes in, i could do buns&abs in 20..i liked having that option! after the video became mondane, i just used the ones i liked best & did them longer & more often...i dont use the dvd anymore - instead i use everything i learned right at my gym (but i keep it on hand for those days i just don't feel like going!)

Get this... the videos are only about 20 minutes long and if you do them only 3 times a week, while eating healthy, you'll DEFINITELY see a difference. When I was working out for the wedding, i was doing the video 3 x's a week and jazzercise about 3 times a week and i was very happy with the results. The videos are inexpensive, too.

The ab video is my favorite b/c it gives you that Victoria's Secret model type stomach, not a hard six pack, which I didn't want.

You can also test out pilates on the channel exercise on demand. They have alot of pilates workouts on there for you to try. They have Stott Pilates, winsor pilates and many more. The best part is that its free, and if theres a certain type you prefer you can get the dvd of that one

Re: Pilates

Pilates will literally change your body if you do it often enough and make sure your technique is perfect. The technique thing is the problem with the videos - they cannot correct your form if something is off and it's usually the little things with alignment that make the whole workout. I teach Pilates so I'm probably biased., haha. Suggest that your gym add more classes! We take suggestions all the time where I work and actually make the changes.

And Definitly try out the Reformer (the machine) if you can. It's amazing! Although a really good instructor can almost mimic the reformer using different tools, but it's still not the same.

Re: Pilates

I love Pilates - I use a Pilates abs DVD by Gaiam, I haven't taken classes. I also have a Cardio Pilates DVD. I have done them on and off, but lately I want to flatten my tummy so I've been doing the abs one several times a week. I've seen a difference after even a week, at least in my upper abs (lower abs are still being stubborn). The ab exercises are supposed to be much more affective than crunches or sit ups, so you don't have to do as many reps to get results. I'm happy with it so far.

I don't know anything about pilates machines, I say try a DVD first. Good luck!

i really liked pilates when i did it. I haven't had much time to work out or diet properly lately.. but it's def. something i'd love to start again!!!!!! We did a few classes and oh man was i in pain the next day..lol. You really feel it working!! When i first started weight watchers i used to do the home tapes and it really made a difference!

Re: Pilates

I used to take studio mat classes and I really liked having a instructor there over a DVD. THey were there to correct you and I think more than going to a gym class with pilates the instructors are prob better trained. It also was more motivating for me and flattened my abs. I would totally recommend taking classes. But, I just find it hard to be movitivated at home when my couch is so close.

My dance classes in college always began with Pilates. I have a couple videos for it too. But now I have done it enough that I can go through some of the excercises while watching tv. I love it!

There are multiple versions (different workouts), but only one Winsor Pilates.

I've never purchased it at a store, i've always bought it online.

Oh doody - I was hoping to buy it today because I missed my class last night and now want to do it at home instead! I think I will take a walk to Best Buy and see what they have...if not I will have to order.

Re: Pilates

I hated it! I did it for 2 years w/a personal trainer 3 to 4 x a wk for 60 min. I found that my body was stronger for sure, I was always sore, but it did not trim down inches w/out cardio.

It built up areas -muscles that I didn't care for to be built up - boxy like around my back and hip area.It definitely changes the shape of your body.
Even my hub noticed it and told me to no longer to do it.

I found Yoga is just better in general for strength.
I also felt it was gimmicky for weight loss.

I think everyone's body might be different.
