The two people are best friends and roommates.The names have been changed to protect the innocent:
Mary says to Cathy - Oh I saw the electric bill came in, how much do I owe you?
Cathy says dont worry about it now, I will tally everything up and let you know.
2 weeks go by and on Wedesday Cathy calls Mary frantically saying 'I paid the bill and you owe $XXX. Hurry I need this $$$ from you because the bill is due today. Mary says I am working till late (11pm) tonight and cant get to the bank. I wish you gave me more notice.
The next day, Thurs, Mary says to Cathy, I have the $$ and will meet you at your job at 2:00. Cathy says ok good I really need the $$$. Mary goes there and Cathie is not at work and does not answer her cell phone. After awhile Mary leaves and never gets the money to Cathy. (PS they are roommates but work opposite schedules.)
Now its Friday and Cathie finds out her bank charged her two overdraft fees for $35.00 each becuase she wrote a bad check and had no money in her account. Cathie is furious and tells Mary. Mary doesnt think its her fault.
Another day goes by and more overdrafts for a total of 3-4 overdrafts. Mary still doesnt think its her fault because Cathy took too long to tell her the $$ was due. Cahty wants the overdraft money from Mary and is now in a fight over it.
What should Mary do??? Or what would you do?
Also on a side note - Mary thinks Cathy isnt good with money and just bought a $100 pocketbook that she didnt have $$ for! Not her business but maybe she would have had money in her acct if she didnt buy the purse!

Well I think it is obvious that Cathy is at fault.
I couldnt see one of my friends asking me for the overdrafting money so I cant really answer what I would do. Knowing me I 'd give it bc I have it but be angry.

hmmm....to me Cathy is at fault..especially that Mary even took the time to go to her job in the middle of the day & try to get it to her. To be a good friend - i would maybe give her a PORTION of the bank fees...maybe half of the FIRST one..but other than that - sorry! Cathy's fault & deep down she probably knows it!

I said yes they should split it. I do not think that it is Mary's fault- a miscommunication. I think the right thing to do is split the overdraft fees and be done with it. Next month is a new month. I know how irritating it is when splitting money between roommates but hopefully they can work this out.

so basically cathy was asking for the money, b/c she must have paid the whole bill herself, and then said to herself 'When I need it I will ask for it' and probably needed it in an emergency b/c she bought something she probably shouldn't have, and then got mad at Mary.

I've been the one that overdrafted- because DH gave me money later than he was supposed to or whatever- but it was my own fault, and honestly if you dont have the money, you shouldnt write the check- I have since learned that thank god.

Cathy needs to learn how to balance her checkbook so she keeps a + balance & get a checking account with overdraft protection... Not Mary's fault she stinks at being responsible.

In these situations I am a pushover and in order not to fight with my roomate I would prob split it or something with her

no, cathy should know how much money is in her acct. and she very well knew that whatever she had will not cover the the checks.. so its her fault..

I think she should give her 1/2 of the 1st overdraft fee. Even thought she tried, she could have been more on top of giving her the money for the bill in the first place ( i know she asked..but ask again!) The 2nd, 3rd and 4th overdraft fees were her own damn fault. She knew their was no money so she shouldn't have kept spending.

Cathy is at fault. Mary should take over paying the bills. That is what I would do - because I feel a lot of the time that nothing gets done right if you don't do it yourself, and that's bad -- because I can't delegate, and I don't trust things will get done if I DO delegate. So this is probably not the best way to handle it, but it's how I would do it ....

I think it's Cathy's fault - but what should be done first is to call the bank explain the situation and see if some of the overdraft fees can be waived and then split the costs.

i agree. you are in charge of your own checkbook and responsible for writing (or not writing) checks that u know may or may not bounce (regardless of if it is for a joint bill or your own etc).
also the responsibility falls more on the person writing the check & paying that specific bill to make sure to get the $ on time.
