Popular dolls for small girls??

My niece/goddaughter is not even 2, but I want to buy her her first doll. I was thinking about an american girl biddy baby, but she might be too young for one of those ... anyone have any other suggestions for a good doll? I might get her a dora doll since she loooooves dora (she walks around the house saying 'backpack!') but it's nothing collectable, and I was hoping to get her something she could have forever.....

TIA!

Not sure the cost or the name of the doll....

but you order the doll and they send you a kit. You specify attributes of the child...hair color, eye color, etc. I think you even can send a photo of the child.

Then, you get a doll that looks like the child.

I bought my niece who just turned one a bitty baby. They aren't cheap but they are good quality.

If not go to the toy store -- there are so many of them in all different price ranges.

My daughter is 6 and she loves American Girl. We are getting her the bitty twins for Christmas. For a 2 year old though, it may be a bit too expensive. They have a whole aisle of dolls at Toys R Us. I would get her one there, and then get some accessories (stroller, bottle, clothes) She would probably love all the 'stuff' and you'll probably end up spending less than an American Girl.

The COROLLE line of baby dolls-FAO Scwartz carreis them. I think Toys R US Might but not sure. They arent cheap-easily $40 bucks for a doll but I like them because they have great accessories and its the first mainstream doll company I have seen who does 'minority' dolls. They were big sellers when I worked there because they amde asian baby dolls, and we had many families coming in who adopted asian children.

These are made specifically for toddlers:

These are the 'older' dolls-ones that look more like 5 and 6 year olds and older.

REALLY cute. Again not cheap but I love that you can choose dolls that look more like the little girls who own them. A friend of mine swears by them-she has several for her daughter of all different skin tones and ethnicities.
