Pre-Conceived Ideas About Marriage

I think everyone goes into marriage with some preconceived ideas and then BAM...the reality of marriage hits you. Not necessarily in a bad way. But you get a reality check. Know what I mean?

What preconceived idea did you go into marriage with and was later given a dose of reality once you go married?

I think that before the wedding, I thought marriage was all lovey-dovey and that I'd be the center of everything....and I'm not, and it's not.....we argue, we disagree, he still hangs out with his best friends as do I.....it's more a partnership...we make plans...we discuss things.....and we are learning to consider the other person more when doing something for ourselves

I think it's really hard not to have pre-conceived notions about marriage. The planning of the day and all the good feelings make it hard not to create in your mind what you think your life will be.

However, what I've learned after almost 4 years of marriage is that you cannot change your mate, he only adjust to certain things, I've learned that you will have ups and downs and it's normal, basically, everything is the same as before you get married, you are just legally bound. It's a beautiful thing though - it's so important to love a person for who they are, if you think you're going to change him/her you are in BIG trouble!

Something that has really surprised me is the amount of work marriage takes. It is not something that just comes naturally, it takes you and DH making deliberate decisions everyday to make it work.

Yes, what a lot of bride don't know BEFORE the wedding is all the work that it takes to keep things exciting and fresh!! However, it's not so much that it's work, it's just really getting know and understand one another. It's a beautiful thing though!

I agree. All the effort that you have to put into your marriage is well worth it.
