Puppy question...because many dont frequent the pet board
DH and i are looking for a puppy...i want to adopt but we stiooed in a pet store that had a sign for puppies so we stopped in i figured maybe they had a few to adopt with a small adoption fee. They had a really cute cocker spaniel mixed with a beagle which surprisingly looked like a lab. It was 12 weeks old and had its first set of shots. It was microchipped as well. The puppy was $800...$500 if we paid cash. They said it came with a one year health guarantee. Does this seem shady to anyone else? As adorable as the puppy is i am inclined to adopt. Any input?

I agree it sounds shady-especially the cash part. I would keep looking.

What's the name of the pet store? Definitely research it before you decide to buy a puppy there. A lot of these pet stores are very shady!

Sounds strange to me. Try looking at north shore animal league. They ask for a minimum of 100 donation to adopt. All the money goes back to north shore and you get spa/neuter free, plus most of their shots are provides. Get there very early when it opens because puppies go really fast!

I'm not sure of the name of the pet store...it was in lake ronkonkoma right on portion road. Like i said we just stopped in there but i have a feeling something is very wrong. I keep googling beagle/cocker spaniel mix and it seems more like an accidental mix rather than a desired mix.

That's the intention. I've been reseaching different breeds. In dh's house before we got married he had a neopolitan mastiff (his brothers dog) and before i got married i had a black lab mixed with an irish wolfhound (family dog...stayed with my parents). I want to get a puppy in mid june when im finishing up teaching so i can be home with him and can train him the way i want to. Im more or less concerned with the dogs at this shop because something seems weird.

It's never a good idea to buy a dog from a pet store as most of them come from puppy mills, and giving that pet store any sort of money is just making the puppy mills thrive. Plus the deals that they're offering just sound so super shady. I would keep looking... HTH.

well, the price seems about right..but weird that they dropped the price $300 if you paid cash...thats strange..also, a 1yr health guarentee...not likely! They give you 2 weeks..and thats it...
I purchased my Yorkie 5yrs ago. He was $500 no matter how I paid ( I paid credit) and they gave me a week to get him checked out and I believe a month if I wanted to return him...not a year.

the 'suggested' donation is now $175

It actually depends on the pet you adopt. There was no donation required when we adopted our dog because he was over a year and at the shelter for over 6 months. We gave a large donation anyway because he recieved a lot of medical attention and was obviously well cared for while he was there.
To the OP: If you're looking for a pet and not an animal to show, why not adopt? There are so many pets that needs home, but because they don't have a cute breed name are sitting in shelters, something to check out before you decide on a pet for you.

If you look at my op we do want to adopt. We're not considering a pure breed. All of the dogs i have had have been adopted. My question here is that i think there is something shady going on in this pet store and i feel for the pets in there.

I definitely agree with this. I would never get a puppy from a pet shop. The best bets are breeders (if looking for a purebred) or an animal rescue place (for mixed breeds).
Best of luck in your search for the newest member of your family!!

Definitely shady! Go to the ASPCA or Northshore!

I guess the fee went out because we adopted 4 years ago it was 100. I feel that it is such a great cause, I think most people donate more.

I am totally against pet store puppies. I feel horrible for them, and yes they are adorable, and yes they shouldn't be punished for what the puppy mills are doing but they are! :(
Adopting is a great thing! If you are looking to get a dog at a particular time keep in mind that going through a breeder is a tough option if you don't do research first b/c they don't always have litters and when they do they can't go home for 8-10 weeks. (i know you didn't mention breeder but i figured i'd throw this option in) dogs at north shore just want to be loved and need a good home. It breaks my heart that they are there. I'd take them all if i could:(

Our German Shep was $1000 if we paid cash, so I don't think the cash discount is that unusual. Whats unusual is that it doesn't look like a cocker spaniel.
