Question about Jewish funerals

A good friend's mom just passed away...and the funeral info given is for just one day...i've always been to 2 days of wakes and then the burial.

But i've never been to a Jewish funeral...anything I should know or bring? (For example..catholics have mass cards....)
Thanks in advance!!!

No, I do not think you need to bring anything. Unless they are ultra religious.....then I do not know.

Re: Question about Jewish funerals

You don't need to bring anything. Also, there are no wakes for jewish funerals.....there is a funeral 'service' of sorts and then you are buried right after. Also, don't send flowers....if you want, send food to the house. Instead of a wake....jewish families sit 'shiva' the week the person dies. It's a period of mourning....people stop in at the house and visit with the family, talk and eat....there's always eating.

Re: Question about Jewish funerals

I think all Jewish funerals are a one day affair, followed by a week of 'shiva' (mourning period) for the immediate family?
Here's a link though, see if this helps; I'm sure some of our Jewish ladies will weigh in with better info though!!!

Re: Question about Jewish funerals

If you have questions I'm not answering, feel free to FM me! I'm on my way out for an appointment, so I'm gonna answer as much as I can as quickly as I can.

Jewish funerals are very different from Catholic funerals.

The funeral is typically done as quickly as possible, usually within a couple of days of the person passing.

There is no viewing of the body, no wake. Do not send flowers, they are not appropriate. If you want to send something, I would suggest some sort of food (like cookies, fruit, etc. from a Kosher place) ... you send it to the house where they are sitting Shiva.

After the funeral service, they go directly to the cemetery for the burial. There is no headstone yet -- that comes around a year later along with an unveiling ceremony at the cemetery.

The Shiva is usually 7 days (less religious may only observe this for 3 or 5 days) following the funeral, the family sits together and has time to mourn and grieve together. It also gives friends and family time to visit with the family who had the loss.

Sorry if I'm rambling or confusing, I'll be back with more info & answers later

yeah they bury their dead as soon as possible--i know that is part of their traditions....to return the body to the earth quickly.

i wouldn't think you need to bring anything--just pay respects. for the time afterwards, it depends on whether they are more conservative Jews, or Orthodox. my sister attended the funeral of a co-workers mother -- and her school is run entirely of Orthodox Jews, and they followed the mourning period traditions strictly with the shiva afterwards as well as certain days that they have gatherings and prayer. but i'm sure not all sects do this.

also, not sure on how religious the family is, but see if you can find something to wear that covers your elbows and knees
