Re: question about new SS card....
Got mine in one week. I live in queens so had to go to the central card processing station in Jamaica. You do get a receipt letter stating that a new card is being issued with your new name.

They dont issue it on the spot but you can ask them for a form that has your new name and your number and says that you are changing your name. They stamp it and all-its official. I went to the bank with it and it was fine.

Brought my passport and also my original ss card, which they did ask for. Original marriage certificate too. They open really early in the morning, at 7:00. I got there about 8:15 on a Friday and was out the door by 8:30. Download the form so you don't have to fill it out there.

Jamaica, no ifs ands or buts about it.
Jamaica is the central card processing center. That's why we have to go there. I tried here in the city, but was turned away. Wanted to go to Mineola, but the AUTOMATED SYSTEM TELLS YOU IF YOU ARE A RESIDENT OF QUEENS YOU HAVE TO GO TO JAMAICA.

REALLY??? So it depends on what borough you live in? THAT SUCKSASS cuz I was hoping to do it in the morning and just head into work (there's an SS office in Midtown).

Tell me about it - the SS office is down the block and around the corner from my office. Good thing is that Jamaica opens at 7 in the morning, and if all your paperwork is straight, you can be in and out in no time. Just hop on the railroad to Penn or take the subway to the city.

I'm actually really P.O.'d right now cuz I just remembered there's a SS office right near my home in Queens! Do you know what subway is near the Jamaica SS office? Thx!

I had no choice but to take the bus all the way from Whitestone. Let me think.... the SS office is on Jamaica avenue right off of Parsons Blvd. E train to the last stop, Parsons Blvd/ARcher Avenue, walk one block up to Jamaica Avenue ; or F train to Hillside and Parsons, then transfer to the #34 bus to Jamaica Avenue.

Not to hijack this thread even further, but (1) that suckssss that you took the bus from Whitestone, and (2) isn't the last stop on the E train 71st Continental? And it's walking distance from there? That wouldn't be too bad...
ETA: ok ignore that... 71st is the last stop for the GRV trains, not the E. The E is 3 long express stops from 71st. Thanks!

Re: question about new SS card....
not too bad of a ride. #34 bus is out of our depot, so I get a free ride. perks of being an MTA bride.
Last stop is Jamaica Center (Parsons/Archer Ave). It is just one block to walk.

Yep, Susi is 100% correct and I just looked it up - suckkkkkkks for Queens and Brooklyn residents - we HAVE to go to the central office in our respective boroughs! Oh well.

Re: question about new SS card....
FYI-they take the old one (or at least they took everyones the day i went ( I had to wait almost an hour and i think every newlywed was there on LI) so if your going to need it, don't give it up, I applied over a week ago and still haven't gotten my new one, they did say If you don't rcv it in 2 weeks to call. they did give me a reciept, but I have no SS card as of now. So if you need it for a job, I'd wait.
