Question about TY card etiquette?

I grew up in a small family church where everyone was like family. But I couldn't invite everyone along with our huge families...our guest list would have been over 500. I think the un-invited were offended, especially since almost all of the un-invited did invite our family to their family weddings...and I did feel really bad. If I had the money and space, I would have invited everyone. I ended up invited just my close friends from church and their families...and some of my parents' close friends.

Anyway, most of the un-invited guests did give us monetary wedding gifts (pretty generous too)...which made me feel worse. I feel like I should make their TY cards extra personal...maybe write a little something about what they mean to me. Would that be too cheesy or too obvious that I'm trying to make up for the fact that I couldn't invite them?
