question for those of you who are or know about substitute teaching
How exactly does it work? Do you have to literally stay home every morning/afternoon waiting for a phone call from a school to call you in if a teacher is absent? On average, how often do you get a call to come in per week?

Depends on the district. I subbed on a pretty regular basis for about a year, while I was finishing up grad school. On average I would sub at least 4 days a week. The woman in the office would let me know beforehand if there she needed subs, so many times I knew in advance or at least by the night before so I didn't have to wait for a phone call. There were, however, many times where I was called at 5:30am to let me know of any opening.

Hi, I subbed for a a long time in Queens. Most of my work they would tell me beforehand. If you you get in a school that likes you they will call you a lot. I worked almost everyday.
If not, I signed up with sub central and got calls nonstop starting at 5 pm and ending 10:30. Then they start up again at 5:30 am. The school if they like you will put you on their 'preferred list'. I was the first one sub central called for that school.
It is a pian in the a$$. I usually ended up turning the thing off becasue tons of schools would call through that automated system nonstop. .
Regardless, many schools know they need a sub in advance. I am sure you can work many days that way. It is a bit chaotic to be called in the morning and then run.
If you are looking in NYC to sub FM me. I know a few schools that are always looking,
Good Luck!

hey millie!
steve subs... he did it in NY and also does it here...
a lot of it is online here which is great. he just signs onto the website and he can see what jobs are available and he can pick and choose which ones he wants. he also gets automated calls for job offers too - he was able to choose times for them to call him (like no later than x pm or no earlier than x am)....
it's very variable though. some weeks he'll work 5 days, sometimes he won't work at all. but he also only does middle/high schools so that definitely limits his job opportunities.
lots of luck to you!
