Question for those who honeymooned in Italy

How did you find the hotels you stayed at and how did you make reservations? We found a few things on line but I am a little reluctant to make reservations on the internet. Should I not be? Our travel agent is looking into a few places for us but you can’t rely too much on a travel agent, can you? Any recommendations or thoughts? We are going to Rome, Umbria regent, Tuscany regent with a 3-day stop in Florence, and last Venice and a few towns around it, like Verona for example.

Re: Queston for those who honeymooned in Italy

We stayed in the Hotel Ala in Venice and it was wonderful. We found all our hotels over the internet and had our travel service book them for us.

We use Travelers Advantage for most of our travel plans www.travelersadvantage.com they have an annual membership fee but we have always made more than the fee back in savings. They give you 5% cash back on almost everything you book. Our Italy trip cash back more than paid for our membership fee.

WhatNow, I didn't honeymoon in Italy but went on a tour sponsored by Cosmos. I have found that in general the beds in the 3 star hotels were too soft and the walls somewhat thin. Other than that, no complaints.

We used a travel agent at Liberty Travel but we did all the research-she just made the reservations. Basically-we told her which days we wanted to go and she gave us listings of hotels they get deals with. We research lots of the listings using online services like Fodors and Frommers but we also did some research by looking through the travel books at book stores.
We spent 4 days in Rome, a week in Florence and then a week in Sorrento. It worked out really well for us!
Let me know if you need more info!

WhatNow, definitely stick to the 4* hotels, especially in the larger towns... I think also Sonicstef went to Italy on honeymoon, so FM her.

Re: Question for those who honeymooned in Italy

What sort of hotels are you looking for? If you want to stay in the best places, a travel agent is going to have no problem selecting those because each city has a few top rated hotels that most people in the travel industry recognize and respect. If you want more out of the way, less luxiorious places find a travel agent who specializes in Italy and they will have lots of suggestions. However - most travel agents have never been to Italy and if they have, only once - so they dont have a great deal of info so selecting the right one is important.

We took an organized tour because I didnt want to have to deal with planning out the trip, sightseeing, meals and transportation. We stayed in 3 and 4 star hotels and they were all very good (surpringly excellent in some cities).

We did the same thing that LeeLee did - We did all the research ourselves and then used a travel agent from Austin Travel just to book the hotels and arrange for transportation (we also got the airline tickets on our own).
