question for today 10/23

Since we just discussed our MIL, we can now discuss the other in-laws (FIL, SIL and BIL).

Re: question for today 10/23

I have 4 SIL. Yes 4. My husband is the only boy. They are jealous of each other always trying to outdo each other, therefore, I stay far away from all of them. My rationale is that if they are that way with each other, how are they going to be with me. I think they sometimes jealous of the relationship, I have with their mother. Here is an example, I took their mother to have pictures taken for her 50th birthday. One of the sister who saw the picture said she look as if she is dead in the picture. She was so lucky I wasn't there, because she would have been told off. I was livid, because you do not say something like that anyone. They treat her like s---, and b/c someone does something nice for her. Their only response is negative.

Re: question for today 10/23

Do you really want me to go there? You ladies MUST be bored of my rantings already....

On my husbands side of the family, he only has one brother and a sister in law. The brother is the model image of the father: arrogant, obnoxious, self-righteous and completely ignorant. He's also a social retard (has NO friends, does nothing, has no outside interests, etc.). He also has the same disease as the FIL (OCD) and spends countless hours everyday doing literally nothing (five to six hours to fold a basket of laundry, etc.). I can't even imagine how he holds down a job.

The SIL, well, she's a piece of work! Someone must have messed around with the cloning process long before we ever heard anything about it, because she IS MIL's daughter. My god, they even look the same! Same nasty, malicious attitude. She's condescending, manipulative, sneaky, incredibly (female dog) and downright mean. She's also ignorant (without a clue) and always pulls this 'I know more about your marriage than you do' b.s. with me (meanwhile I KNOW alot of nasty-nasties her husband has done to her, including cheating on her, but that's another story). I've had my share of falling outs with her too. She's always trying to scam me into talking garbage about MIL to her, then she runs back and tells her (verbatim) what I've said (we've been down that road before). You cannot trust a word she says and you have to wear your body armour around her and constantly check your back for knife wounds. Yet, whenever there is a problem, she comes out smelling like a rose. To give you an example of how mean she can be: While DH and I were dating, we were invited to his aunts for Easter dinner. BIL & SIL (they had just gotten engaged the month prior after only dating seven months - he wasn't even divorced from his 1st wife of just six months at the time - SIL was responsible for their breakup) were there as well. Anyway, DH had given me one of those license plate looking necklaces that say 'I love you' or something on it and the aunt commented how nice it was to me. SIL got all huffy because no one had blown smoke up her butt about how great her 'ring' was, so she turns to me and says 'Well one of THESE (pointing to her finger) is worth SIX of those!!!'. I didn't say anything because I was so blown away by the comment. No one said a word and just ingored her comment completely. I was really ****ed.

On my side of the family, everyone is basically cool. My brother in law (the only one I have) lives in Texas, so how much can you say about him? He's also very down to earth, so when you do see him, it's a pleasant experience.

My middle brother's wife has a tendency to become unglued OFTEN and is not always rational. She's very high strung and is known for going off frequently (very easily frustrated). She comes from a very disturbed (incredibly abusive) background, so you almost can't blame her sometimes for her actions. Despite her outbreaks, she has a good heart and would do anything she could for you. I geniunely care for her.

My youngest brother's girlfriend is fun, nice and sweet. She comes from a great home and has wonderful intentions. She's really turned my brother's life around and I would be thrilled if he decided to marry her.

My oldest brothers wife, well....
They've been married for 17 years and no one can understand why. She's a complete freak. She is forever going through some metamorphasis. She's argumentative (you can't even get her to agree on the color of the sky), insensitive, COMPLETELY self-absorbed, selfish, clueless, etc. You never know how you're going to catch her, either she'll be flying higher than the sky or completely withdrawn and moody. She treats her own family like garbage and expects everyone to cater to her like she's some **** princess. She goes out of her way to insult my middle brother's wife, yet she claims that she's her BEST friend. Since middle brother's wife doesn't want to create waves, she says nothing in retaliation. She doesn't pull it with me, because I've put her in her place a few times. She's going through this 'club' thing now, where she 'parties' with her 'soulmate/boyfriend' that she has now four or five times a week. Mind you, she has three growing girls and a husband who turns his back on her activities because doesn't want to put his children thru a custody battle. Even her own kids don't respect her, as she trapses all over town in skirts shorter than what Brittney Spears wears. She's a total idiot and an embarrassement to be around. We were at a block party recently and she kept running around to the men at the event and asking them if they thought her breasts looked 'perky' in her dollar store halter! Meanwhile, we had to hold their wive's back from taking her down the street and whooping her butt!

Ahhh, families. Aren't they great? Thankfully you have a choice in life over who your friends are!

Re: question for today 10/23

Shamee your in-laws sound like they are right our of a soap opera.

I got pretty lucky with my in-laws...MIL and FIL both treat me like the daughter they never had. I think my MIL is just so happy to have a girl around. But I must say my BIL is the best!! He came down to live with us in FL last year so I really got to know him well. And he is just the biggest sweet heart. He has since moved back up north but every once in a while he will call me when DH is traveling to make sure I'm ok.

I have to say I was very lucky also. Both my FIL & MIL treat me like another daughter. I get along great with my SIL. And that's all I have. So no huge family fights ever. Well, at least for now!

Let's see -

A SIL who is nice when her annoying brothers aren't around teasing her

A BIL that I get along with well. His wife is a really nice woman but we don't have anything in common and I have a hard time having a conversation with her.

A SBIL (step brother in law) that doesn't really speak to anyone - i think he's the strong silent type. lol. His wife is very nice and I get along with her very well.

Well, I used to think that I would have a nice relationship with my SIL (this assumption was pre-wedding and pre-baby). But, in recent months, she has shown her selfish, self-absorbed and rude side to me and I consequently have no time for her.

It really doesn't impact my everyday life since she lives in GA and we see her maybe once or twice a year.

Re: question for today 10/23

My BIL are great, they have been great to me. My SIL's are way older than I am some of them could be my mother. The one that are here in NY I think do not like the idea that their baby brother loves someone else outside of the family. The reception has been cordial but cold. NOne of them attended my shower...oh well. All I say, is as long as I am respected I could care less if you do not like me. AND PLEASE DO NOT BUTT IN TO OUR AFFAIRS, they have not yet and I hope to keep it that way.

I am an only child so my hubby is lucky

Re: question for today 10/23

I agree with Shamma about the respect thing. I also demanded respect, and I did that from day one; so his family knows not to come to with any bull. What they say or do behind my back, doesn't bother me.

My husband sometimes kid me and say that they are afraid of me. My response is 'oh, little me'

Re: question for today 10/23

DH is an only child, and I guess that can have its benefits !!
Also, his dad passed away 13 years ago, so I never met him

But seriously, I LOVE big families, and I wish he did have brothers and sisters ! Ehh, I have enough of my own, LOL. (2 older brothers, and my twin)...

As far as my MIL, she is GREAT. She is fun, trendy, easy going, happy, 'lets go shopping' kinda lady. Shes a blessing of a MIL, Grandma, mom and person ! She even treats my sis like a DIL (gets her the same gifts as me for our bday-and shes no cheapo !!) and treats my sis' kids like her own grandkids (gifts every time she sees them!)
So now John Anthony has stepped into the picture, her OWN flesh and blood, Maybe he'll get a new car for xmas ! LOL.

Re: question for today 10/23

Long, twisted story short --> my DH was the youngest of 6 boys -- and was abused by his brothers growing up (the stories would break your heart). DH is his Mom's clear favorite, and his brothers are jealous & hate him for it. And their wives are catty witches.

My DH was going through a very rough time before I met him -- and only his Mom, aunt & cousin stood by him. His brothers totally wrote him off. One even took advantage of his brother's misfortune to steal money from him (long, long story...).

Anyway - when I met DH I helped him get back on his feet & stood by him. Now that they see we're together, and DH has a beautiful home and is married to a successful woman -- suddenly they all come around like nothing happened... except for the brother that stole money -- he doesn't dare show his face! That fight is way out in the open.

His Mom is the greatest, but as far as I'm concerned, the rest of his family is pure Jerry Springer-esque trash! We invited all but the one brother to the wedding, but they had absolutely no part in it --> no readings, no photographs --> they didn't even get to walk their Mom into the reception (DH's dad died almost 10 years ago).

Luckily I don't have to see them except at my MIL's for holiday events -- and so far it's all been very polite -- especially since the BIL we don't speak to & his evil wife got into a fight with my MIL too!

Dora, I know we all complain about in-laws, but I just wanted to say that I'm sorry your situation is so horrible. Your DH is lucky to have you support him, especially if his own siblings have not been good to him.

Now ANNA - I have always hoped and prayed for a MIL like yours! No such luck on my part Not that my MIL is bad, but she's not the 'girly' type, and she certainly wouldn't suggest we go shopping together. She has a very blah personality - you practically have to tell her what to say to keep a conversation going! It's sooooo annoying!

I cannot believe I have to go see them for Turkey Day....

Re: question for today 10/23

We will need a turkey day review. I am off to my hubby's sister's home in New Orleans for turkey day. The only reason I am going is b/c hubby paid for it. He knew I would not go unless he was footing the bill.

Re: question for today 10/23

Talking about Turkey day, I was so glad that my husband proclaimed we are spending it in NY with my parents. I don't think I would be able to deal with another one in MD. The last one was my worst, and I don't care for repeat performance.

My husbacn doesnt have any siblings. My sister's husband is really nice, a little on the quiet side.
But My brother's fiance, well I HATE HER!!!
It is a Lonnnng story, and I can write a novel about her. Ever since he dated her, we hardly see my brother. The last time we were invited over was 2 years ago on Mother's Day.
She is always doing stuff with HER family around the holidays.
He is getting married to her in June in Hawaii, and NO ONE is invited

Re: question for today 10/23

I have a very sweet SIL (brother's wife) but she lives way out in Arizona, so I don't see her much. We e-mailed for awhile, but lost touch when she was out on maternity leave earlier this year. Gotta send her a message.

Hubby has one brother, a real sweetheart. He loves my Chocolate Chip cookies and it's become an ongoing thing that I have hot cookies coming out of the oven everytime he comes out to visit (from Queens). I've got it down so I can whip up a batch from scratch in about 10 minutes and have the whole thing done in under 45 minutes - bowls washed and all.

Re: question for today 10/23

I have 2 SILs- both older than my hubby and both live at home STILL. My MIL is very controlling and did find it difficult when we got married. I have tried being 'friends' with my SILs but if I invite one out, the other comes anyway- they are a package deal. Anything I say to them they tell their mother- its so annoying...then my MIL will call up and say 'Suzy told me this...' and ask questions and interrogate. I adore my FIL- he's just like my hubby but the women on his side of the family irk me....see my post on the NWR board from a few weeks ago~!

Re: question for today 10/23

Hi Ladies!
MIL- has treated me like a daughter pretty much from when Rob & I started dating. I am very grateful for that - since both my parents have passed away. She LOVES to go shopping- in fact,I have had to talk to her about scaling back- and not gowing crazy buying kiddie stuff. She really cannot afford to do it....
ROb has 2 younger sisters. One is married w/ 2 kids and lives in FLA. She and I get along REALLY well- just found out she is the same age as I am.. She is very diligent- a great mom- juggles 2 kids, a thriving mary kay biz, works part time as a dental tech, and is the den mom for the cub scouts. One put together lady..she can be a bit curt..but I am a pretty shoot from the hip gal too- so it all works.
His youngest sis is well, like , still trying to 'find' herself. Was married, got divorced after some nasty things occurred to her. ..and she is dealing with a medical problem...and not working .
I tally some of it up to 'youngest sibling disorder'...sinc ethey are the youngest, they are not expected to be over achievers...

So, I get along with her well enough although her thinking sometimes causes me to shake my head and wonder....

Re: question for today 10/23

Claud2001:

You are so sweet to say that -- but honestly my situation is not bad at all -- especially compared with stories like Shamee. I hardly have to deal with my DH's family and like I said -- they are 'polite.' My DH is the one who had it bad -- and he sees the situation for what it is -- so it's not like I'm playing tug of war with his family over his affections. Plus my MIL is a great lady - and she really appreciates the relationship me & DH have, which is awesome.

What can you do -- the best revenge is to live a full and happy life and let the rest of them choke on their jealousy!
