QUESTION WITHDRAWN

Original post by natasha

It seems like it doesn't matter what happens with the weapon inspection, what the U.N., or the rest of the world thinks, we are going war. I must say that I am disappointed in our president. We have so much pressing issues at home, especially the economy, and his biggest concern is war with Iraq.

What do you think?

Claud: We are definitely not fighting! Just talking. And even if you had a ' I heart W' tatto - I still wouldnt think we were fighting :D

I really am against war of any kind whether our country is involved or not. I do not know why the US has to be the police of the world and I do not know why we have to be involved in everyone's business. We are telling everyone to disarm, are we doing our part to disarm??? It really makes me wonder for all these congressmen that are voting for war, how many of them or how many of their children will be out there fighting. I think there are good sides to the US and bad sides. I love this country I just wish we would fix what's wrong here before we try to solve their world's issues.

Shamma, I was wondering the same thing, whey are we allowed to have nukes, but no one else is? Some people may think that Bush is as crazy as Saddam, (I'm not saying that he is) and will use nukes if necessary.

Alina - I am sorry if I offended you. That certainly wasn't my intent. I realize the US is no innocent in the world of politics and wars.

Claud, well said! I agree with your viewpoints and applaud your for speaking up on this issue. We are entitled to differing opinions like Stef said, which leads me to this comment made:

The people who want war are fouls, plain and simple

Who wants war? No one wants war. But for those that support war because of the threat that Iraq may place on the US is a fool, then watch out, this board may get ugly!

Shamma, I hear you....but, unfortunately, when you are the most powerful country in the world, you don't have the luxury of just sitting back and not getting involved.
To say that we should just mind our own business and focus on our own problems is a very 'isolationist' point of view. In fact, that's one thing that you'd have in common with George W. Truthfully, the man had NO FORIEGN POLICY whatsoever before 9/11. The attacks forced him to get involved, and unfortunately for us, he's taking it to the extremes by adding Saddam to his hit list.

Shamma, did you see Gangs of NY? There was a point made there a few times, that if you had $300 you could avoid the draft (albeit into a different war, but war nonetheless)

Isolationist or not, if we were never there or never got involved in the first place we would not be in up to where we are now. I know it might have been inherited from past actions, but it can be stopped somewhere or somehow. Being the world's most powerful country does not give us the right to boss everyone around, who made us the world police, who is watching what we do??

I wonder how many of these congressmen/women, mommies or daddies would vote for mandatory draft. Send your son or your daughter, see if they will not find another way to solve issues.

Alina, are you saying the US does not get in war with powerful countries??? is that how that comment from the movie is being related??

The only statement I'm going to make is I stand behind Claud's statements. You sound like you are very 'in the know' concerning the real issues.

Shamma, I was confused about your last reply.

When I made a referrence to the movie, I made a point of agreeing with you on this (posted in a later msg, but saying the same thing):

I wonder how many of these congressmen/women, mommies or daddies would vote for mandatory draft. Send your son or your daughter, see if they will not find another way to solve issues.

I generalized this statement, implying that congressmen are rich (please don't beat me over the head on this one), and thus can pay off so that their children don't have to go to war, just like in the movie. I wonder if the same issue will come up if there is a mandatory draft this time around.

For those who have not seen the Gangs of NY, the movie takes place in 1863 and at that time there is a mandatory draft into the Civil War. The rich can pay $300 and avoid the draft.

Edited for the brief description of movie timing.

Shamma, I don't believe I said anywhere that US does not get into wars with powerful countries. I disagree with such statement.

Re: 1/23/03 QOTD - Are you concerned about the possibility of war with Iraq?

ALina that is why I ask, I did not know which statement that I made that you were making the movie comment towards, so that is why I ask for clarification. No where in my response did I say you said....Now you have clarified that, my question has been answered. Thanks

Re: 1/23/03 QOTD - Are you concerned about the possibility of war with Iraq?

I don't think that anyone is looking for people to stand behind their particular statements made here...I certainly am not. I am just discussing and issue that was raised. And, believe me...I am by no means a political expert, so tread lightly. LOL.
Honestly, I just try to see both sides of an issue, regardless of my own political views.

I think it's important that we all remember that our government was founded in the belief that American people should having the freedom to express their views and believe in different political affiliations.

I have to say, I am surprised to hear the view that we should just stand aside and not get involved in any issues abroad. I think the irony here is that when weaker countries are getting attacked, if the US doesn't get involved, we are criticized for not caring about the rest of the world. As the most powerful nation in the world, we can never win. Other people around the world see our lifestyles as extravagant and privledged, and in some cases - they are right!

But, we have to be involved in the World, no matter how much it pains us to see conflict. I do not advocate war at all. But, we live in the World, not just the US. We are not a self-sufficient country. If we cut ourselves off from every other nation, that our economy would be much worse than it already is. What would happen to people and companies that make a living by exporting goods? And, all those wedding pictures that everyone here fawns over - well, I can guarantee that many of them were taken with cameras that were manufactured in Japan and imported to the US. So, you see...we are all in this together...and unfortunately, the rest of the world doesn't live by the 'Can't We All Just Get Along' mantra that we live by here at LIWeddings.

Re: 1/23/03 QOTD - Are you concerned about the possibility of war with Iraq?

Oversimplified? I think most people understood my point and didn't take it as literally as others. I do not think you need Mommy-power at all. It is just that I truly believe that the majority of women around the World would rather not see war and would do whatever it took to avoid sending troops with guns to another country. I cannot even watch war movies like Full Metal Jacket or Wind Talkers because I KNOW that somewhere someone's son/cousin/friend/grandson or in many cases young girls/women too are being killed by a someone who just wants to go home. I think women, in general, feel very differently about some of these issues. Again, not all women, and you don't have to be a mother to feel love for others.
Our lives and those of many others are being controlled by Daddy Bush and Baby Bush (and their friends)- funny that they own oil companies isn't it. Let's remember that Bosnia has MAJOR killings, more than 75% of all women had been raped, neighbors were killing each other and the US could care less. But I am sure if there had been oil in Bosnia we would have sent in troops.
9/11 effected people ALL over the World and what those people did was horrible, but I highly doubt that the majority of people in Iraq were involved. Yet if we go to war, people will die, from both sides and Sadam will be eating a hot meal with music playing in a comfy hide-out.
Sorry if I oversimplified my statement as I didn't think I needed to explain my point in detail for people to get my meaning.
