Questions for the Teachers

Questions for the Teachers

A friend of mine is a history teacher and is looking to move to LI. He was asking about qualifications to get a job in the public school. I told him that I thought he needed a master's degree to be considered for a teaching position here on LI but I was not sure....
Anyone having knowledge about this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Questions for the Teachers

Hi...

He does not need a Masters degree. However, he will need a valid new York State teacher's certifcate in social studies, grades 7-12. if he is certified in another state, he needs to contact the state education department in Albany to see how to convert it to a NY license. (I had a PA certificate initially, and it easily transferred). If he has an out-of-state license, he will have to take the NY state teacher certification exams (EASY!)

many districts on LI do hire people with masters degrees, but it is not needed to get initally hired. however, if he is hired in a NYS school (even NYC), to keep his teaching certificate, he must get a Masters within 5 years of being hired and/or initally getting the NYS certification.

HTH! feel free to FM if you need anything else...
