quick question for those of you who keep their last name as their middle name
I am going to SS office today and I want to know if they are going to give me a problem. I couldnt do it on my marraige licence but I really want to keep it as my middle name. How do I go about doing it. Thanks!

Just put that on your application. I had no trouble doing it.

they wouldn't let me do it in the rego park office (queens). now i'm thinking about going to another office.

Now tell me why the heck the rules are different from office to office - that makes no sense!

It's NYS law that doing that consistutes a legal name change that you must go to court for. This differs from state to state as marital law comes under the goverance of the states and not the federal government.
If you do not already have a middle name you may make your maiden name your middle name at the SS office.
If you have a middle name and wish to drop it and add your maiden name in NYS you must appear before a judge for a legal name change.
If any SS office allowed someone who already had a middle name to do this the SS office clerk did not follow procedure and in essence broke the law.

First, change your passport. Then, use your amended passport at SS. It works!
