A four-year-old boy died Saturday after being left in a parked car while his mother visited a nail salon on what was to be her wedding day.
Investigators could not determine whether the 29-year-old mother knew the child was in the Ford Expedition while temperatures outside neared 90 degrees, Palm Beach County Sheriff's spokesman Pete Palenzuela said. The boy may have been in the car more than two hours.
His mother, hours away from what should have been the happiest day of her life, became hysterical and had to be sedated when she learned her boy was dead.
Authorities withheld the name of the child and his mother because of the severe emotional trauma suffered by the family, Palenzuela said.
The woman had dropped off other children earlier in the morning and might not have known the boy was still in the SUV when she arrived at the shopping center at 2650 S. Military Tr. about 9 a.m., Palenzuela said.
After the woman and her sister left the U.S. Nails salon, one of them called 911 at about 11:45 a.m., to report the boy was not breathing.
The boy was taken to Palms West Hospital in Loxahatchee, where he was pronounced dead.
Instead of going to the scheduled wedding, family members in suits and dresses gathered in the Palms West waiting room.
When they learned the boy had died, some erupted with emotion and tried to get into the room where the boy was, said a woman who was there waiting for another patient.
Sheriff's deputies were called to the hospital in response to a report of a disturbance and order was quickly restored, Palenzuela said.
After deputies left, family members stayed at the hospital. None would comment.
U.S. Nails owner Linda Le said members of the wedding party, accompanied by small children, visited the salon Friday night before the bride and her sister returned Saturday morning.
