I'm looking for an apartment in NYC area and I'm finding it very hard to deal with realtors.
They're either rude & condescending; don't ever return calls; or pretty much tell me I'll never find something in my price range. I'm loosing my patience.
Does anyone know of a site where I can find out what homes/apt actually SELL for, as opposed to what they are LISTED for?
Thanks for any help and sorry to vent.

Um, I`m a broker in Manhattan and I`m nice!
Hee Hee! Plus, I return calls! Anyway...I do know what you mean. There are plenty of brokers who just don`t want to be bothered. We`re finding that on Long Island - we`re looking for a house and our budget isn`t $400K+. SO many brokers think we're not realistic...fortunately, I'm in a position to help myself, so to speak.
Domania is a good site and I have another site at home that I`ll post tonight. Hang in there! BTW, what/where are you looking? I have a few Queens sources and maybe I can help.

I'm glad there are some out there! :) I'd love any info you have. Thanks. I tried domania, but there was no specific info. I can't tell if what sold were houses, apt & what size. I know, I'm difficult.
We're looking for a 2 bedroom in Kew Gardens. This is the scenario: I call about an ad posted (either online or in the paper)and eitherno one calls me back, I call repeatedly - and finally get an agent- only to be told it's sold. The last straw was today: I called on Wed about a listing that's been on a site for about 2 weeks. I try to make an appointment, the realtor says they can't get into the apt when I ask to see it. I see the apartment advertised in the newspaper on sunday. I call on Monday. Realtor calls me today and tells me it sold yesterday! What! Either the apartment doesn't exhist and its the old bait & switch, or she just doesn't want to sell to me for some reason (which is totally silly). And this scenario has happened several times in the past three weeks. Or worse, they lie to me about what I'm going to be looking at. I don't want to waste my time or theirs. It's so odd. Plus, a lot of what realtors are offering seems overpriced to me. Property far from transportation in NYC area cannot be the same as property next to the subway! ARGHHH.
I am soooo sorry to vent. I'm now thinking of only looking for owner sales or hitting the pavement and asking doormen if apt are available in buildings I like. It seems like I'll have a better shot this way than dealing with a realtor.

Try this site: http://aolsvc.pf.aol.com/pf/houseandhome/HomeValuationTool
You may have some trouble getting co-op sales prices - especially RECENT ones. They're updated very slowly and not always recorded.
Anyway, I ran a quick search and came up w/ 20 Kew Gardens 2 BR's from $125K to $249.9K (don't know your budget!). These are all listed w/ brokers - not by owner.
If you want to give me your e-mail addy I'll send 'em your way...
:)

Bait and switch - or not...
We found that when we called on houses listed or posted on web sites that they were often sold already. Part of the problem is that the really good ones don`t last long (the one we are buying was listed on a Wednesday and we had our offer accepted the following Sunday). When you consider the lead time of a week or so that is necessary to get something in the paper, it may very well be the case that it was available when the ad was placed, but an offer was accepted in the meantime.
We found our best houses that we looked at were either those in the 'New Real Estate Listings' box in Friday`s Newsday, or those that our broker had just gotten a listing for. That`s where it helps to have a good agent/agency that is getting lots of new listings, because they`ll be able to show you things as soon as they are listed, before they ever make it to the paper.

Kathi - that would be great
I would love to get that list. Thanks for taking the time. My email is [email protected]
I've been told by 2 realtors that there are no 2 bedroom apartments in Kew Gardens for under 200K. It's so disappointing when you're so enthused to find a home and a realtor is rude and discouraging.
As for bait and switch, this has happened to me several times - I ask about a place, get put off for over a week and then the place is sold! Maybe there's an offer pending, but I'd rather know that than be lied to. Is this just another 'rite of passage'?
I live in an apt in rego park and am moving out...my landlord doesn't know what he wants to do...rent again or sell...Its a 2 BR coop on 12th floor, terrace, big LR...1 block from G and R trains, near shopping - I think it is in the low to mid 200s.
if you want his # email me and I'll see what he is going to do. [email protected]

rego park
Thanks for the offer.
We're trying to stay in Kew Gardens. Forest Park is a big draw for us.
