Recommend Your Bank

After some issues with my bank, I'm looking to open up a new checking and/or savings.

I'm torn between:

Citibank
Sovereign
Bank of America

I want free checking without a minimum and overdraft that will only cost me interest when I use it and not an annual or monthly fee.

Do any of you have this at your banks? Any words of warning for the three I listed above?

Thanks!

Re: Recommend Your Bank

I have Citibank, and have had it since I was 18 I think. No complaints on my end, except that they're always opened during hours I can't go.

Hubby and I have a savings account at TD Bank, and I'm really liking their customer service and availability. I can go on a Sunday to a teller - it's pretty awesome. Only thing that sucks is their website hah, but that's about it. I'm considering switching over to TD Bank fully.

Re: Recommend Your Bank

Just stay the hell away from TD! I've been dithering back and fortha bout switching (read: I've been lazy) and everyone has been telling me to go with BOA.

Re: Recommend Your Bank

My checking acct is at Ridgewood Savings Bank- they have branchs in Queens and Long Island

DH Checking, and our savings is at Capital One

We also have another savings at Chase.

I am not thrilled with Capital One- we had problems with them when we were closing my MIL accts when she passed. They wouldnt accept the death certificate. Still fighting with them to get into her safe even though Jerry is listed on there as someone who is able to open it.

Chase- has been great- Have had no problems with them

Re: Recommend Your Bank

I work for Bethpage FCU - if you're on Long Island, definitely go with a credit union.

It's pretty much everything you've asked for: Free checking, no monthly fees, service charges or otherwise, you can earn 1% on your checking balance. As for overdraft, you only pay for what you use.

And just on the whole, their fees are infinitely less than banks... for instance, Chase charges you $8 per bank check, ours are free. We don't charge you if you use an out of network ATM, whereas other places charge you from the bank and the ATM. Little things like that.

ETA: there may not be a Bethpage on every corner like BOA, but their ATM network is huge because they have relationships with tons of other credit unions, and places like 7-11.

Ok, there's my shameless promotion for my company lol

Re: Recommend Your Bank

It's not on your list but I have capital one. 0 fee, o min. balance, and you get rewards with it.

No complaints and I've had it for about 2 years. They also gave me $200 with my first direct deposit.
